More operators look to refurbish hopper barges

As steel prices hover around record high rates, barge operators are facing tough decisions. Recently, Belle Chasse, La., based C&C Marine and Repair, LLC signed a contract to re-side over 200 hopper barges for one of its customers. The process involves replacement of the outer hull walls of the barges, and usually the knuckles, with internals typically being replaced as required, on a case-by-case basis.

Guice is a U.S. flag leader in operating dynamically positioned mini supply and medium-sized multi-purpose vessels in the specialty market, and its latest additions are a further 170-foot DP1 multi-purpose vessel and two 205-foot. Belle Chasse, La., based C&C Marine and Repair has delivered to Hines Furlong Line Inc. the 170’x50′ towboat Scarlett Rose Furlong, the first in a three-boat series that C&C Marine and Repair is building for the Nashville, Tenn. based company.

The triple-screw 6,600-hp towboat’s pilot house has an eyeline measuring 39’3″. Scarlett Rose Furlong was designed by CT Marine LLC, Portland, Maine.

In May, C&C Marine and Repair, New Orleans, delivered the General MacArthur, a 290’x72’x16′ dredge to Galveston, Texas-based Callan Marine LLC.

With an 11’4″draft, the new dredge has a digging depth of 97′, a suction diameter of 34″, and a discharge diameter of 32″.
