For those of us who have been following the project from its earliest days, this has been a long-awaited development: SWITCH Maritime’s hydrogen fuel cell powered ferry the Sea Change has now received its U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection (COI). With the COI, the vessel is now able to commence commercial operations, delivering a zero-emission public ferry service.

Coast Guard releases coronavirus-related bulletin

The Coast Guard released a Marine Safety Information Bulletin yesterday (MSIB Number: 09-20) that discussed the agency’s position on vessel inspections, exams, and documentation during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Coast Guard terminated the voyage of the 45-foot pleasure craft, Breaking the Habit, with 12 passengers aboard Saturday near American Airlines Arena in Miami.

Coast Guard may crack down on overnight vessels

The fatal California dive boat fire has prompted the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) to advise members that a Coast Guard inspection crackdown on overnight vessels might be coming so it would be prudent to review “important safety and risk management essentials.”

In its notice PVA provided annotations to a Coast Guard safety bulletin issued to all commercial vessel operators after the Conception burned just off Santa Cruz Island Sept. 2 killing 33 passengers and one crew.

Weeks Marine gets first New York Coast Guard COIs

The Coast Guard’s New York sector presented its first Subchapter M certificates of inspection to Weeks Marine, Inc. (WMI), Cranford, N.J., for achieving full compliance with the regulations on a pair of its tugboats.

The 77.1’x26’x10.6’, 2,000-hp Elizabeth and the 99.1’x32’x14’, 3,000-hp Katherine are the first to go through the COI process with the sector’s New York Waterways Branch.
