Commentary: Why we didn’t cover the DAT/C.H. Robinson deal

This week, a number of people have pointed out that we did not cover the DAT/C.H. Robinson partnership and suggested that not covering a press announcement between two companies was showing bias.

It is the first time we’ve ever created controversy for a story that we didn’t cover. But I also understand it’s a reflection of our role in the industry.

First off, FreightWaves competes with DAT. In reality, they are the only firm that we consider a real competitor to our SONAR platform. They are...

C.H. Robinson seeks to make 9th Circuit fall guy in liability fight

Freight brokerage giant C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ:CHRW) faces an uphill battle convincing the U.S. Supreme Court to settle the issue of broker liability for damages resulting from accidents involving a trucker hired by the broker but purportedly not under the broker’s employ or control. The high court reviews just 1% to 3% of the 10,000 or so petitions filed with it each year. What’s more, the justices typically focus on cases where they can resolve conflicting opinions among the 13...

Robinson asks Supreme Court to settle `negligent hiring’ battle

The transportation industry wants the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve the contentious issue of whether freight brokers should be liable for damages resulting from accidents involving a trucker who the broker hired to move a load, but who the broker purportedly did not employ or control.

C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ:CHRW), the nation’s largest broker, asked the high court to settle the long-running dispute over “negligent hiring” after an appellate court last September ruled that language...

Supply chain radar: Rail payouts rock as logistics disappoints income hunters

We covered in detail at the end of last year the unimpressive lack of growth in income streams for two different, albeit sizeable, 3PLs in the US – illustrious CH Robinson and Expeditors.
After such a robust 2020 for them as well as all things logistics, actually, after a few bumps on the road in Q2 ’20; with the most prominent players we’ve so far been left with a bittersweet taste …

Market Insight: Product vs sales – then vertical M&A is ‘the $1 trillion question’

I recently exchanged views on the freight forwarding business with Red Yellow Horse (RYH), a galloping executive at a top 20 global logistics services provider. A gifted pro – as it joyfully emerged through a pleasantly vibrant 46 minute  conversation – RYH shed light on a number of industry aspects, crucially including the growing tension that exists in logistics when walking the “product” vs “sales” tightrope.
Our chat took place at …

Conf call redux: CH Robinson mutes analysts

US forwarder CH Robinson had a mixed bag of results in 2020, with Q4 and full-year financials out last week.
The core North American Surface Transportation unit limped to little more than a flat year.
But in Forwarding, Robinson went from strength to strength (our Premium take here).
In the customary post-results conference call between management and the analyst community, the analysts were, in fact, not allowed to speak.
Instead, questions were pre-submitted.
Yawn.
Inevitably, the …

On the wires: CH Robinson – the sweetest thing ain’t sweet enough

“Shippers continue to rely on Robinson’s global supply chain expertise (…) to ensure critical goods are moved as quickly and as inexpensively as possible.” – CH Robinson CEO Bob Biesterfeld, 26 January 2020.
There is a silver lining for CH Robinson (CHRW) shareholders after a couple of very tough days on the market following the release of fourth-quarter and annual results on Tuesday – its performance read: -6% on Wednesday, the …

Strong Q4 the highlight of a difficult year for US forwarder CH Robinson

A strong fourth quarter revived CH Robinson’s 2020 results – a year characterised by higher freight rates in air and ocean, but higher trucking costs as small outfits exited the market.
Full-year gross profit fell 7% to $2.4bn, “primarily driven by lower adjusted gross profit margins in truckload services, partially offset by contributions from the Prime acquisition and higher adjusted gross profits in air and ocean services”.
Q4 revenue increased 19.9%, to …

C.H. Robinson beats earnings estimates with higher revenue, stable margins

C.H. Robinson (NASDAQ: CHRW), the largest North American third-party logistics provider, announced its financial and operational results for the fourth quarter of 2020 after markets closed on Tuesday.

Robinson grew earnings per share to $1.08, up 47.9% from 2019’s dismal fourth quarter and enough to beat Wall Street’s consensus estimate of 94 cents per share.

Higher prices to customers and higher volumes across most modes offered by Robinson led to fourth-quarter revenue of $4.5 billion, up 19.9%...

The Daily Dash: Civil penalties set for drug/alcohol violations; what happened to ‘Shipageddon’?

The Daily Dash is a quick look at what is happening in the freight ecosystem. In today’s edition, the U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a final rule that would set the rates for civil penalties for Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse violations. Plus, the holiday shipping season was not as bad as many feared, and California’s governor proposes $1.5 billion to fund clean trucks and buses.
