China Airlines finalizes deal for 4 Boeing 777-8 cargo aircraft

Taiwan-based China Airlines has placed a firm order for 14 777X widebody aircraft – four 777-8 cargo jets and 10 777-9 passenger aircraft – Boeing announced Thursday. 

The airline, a longtime operator of the Boeing 777 and 747-400 aircraft, will use the aircraft on long-haul flights to North America and Europe. It also has rights to purchase four additional 777-8 freighters and five 777-9 passenger jets.

China Airlines to buy Boeing 777-8 freighters

Taiwan’s China Airlines will order four Boeing 777-8 freighters, a next-generation plane that isn’t expected to reach the market until 2028, it said in a stock exchange filing.

The airline said it would also buy 10 each of the Boeing 777-9 passenger jet and 10 Airbus A350-1000s. The total value of the transactions is $11.9 billion, although airlines typically get discounts for large orders. Each of the 777-8 freighters will cost up to $519 million.

China Airlines orders 4 Boeing 777 freighters after 2021 cargo record

China Airlines said Thursday it has ordered four 777 freighters from Boeing as it seeks to capitalize on a booming air cargo market that helped propel the Taiwan flag carrier’s revenues last year. Deliveries are slated to commence in 2023 and be completed the following year.
