House passes defense bill with ban on Chinese shipping platform

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a defense spending bill on Friday that included a provision limiting China’s ability to monitor the flow of ocean containers into and out of the U.S.

The provision, backed by Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., prohibits U.S. ports that take federal grant money from using China’s state-supported National Public Information Platform for Transportation and Logistics, known as LOGINK.

The provision was included as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization...

Shipping’s China syndrome: Demand sinks across multiple cargo markets

a photo of a China flag

In the mid-2000s, when shipping stocks first became popular on Wall Street, the shares were commonly bought as a play on China’s economy. China is pivotal to ocean shipping, whether it’s container ships, oil tankers, bulkers or gas carriers.

“There’s a saying that everything that moves out of China in containers has to come into China as raw materials,” noted Oeyvind Lindeman, chief commercial officer of Navigator Gas (NYSE: NVGS), on his company’s latest conference call.

Ominously, signs of...

In topsy-turvy commodity trades, small ships outperform big ships

photo of large crude tanker; large ships are earning less than small ships

You pay more to get more. Renting a four-bedroom townhouse is far more expensive than renting a studio apartment. The nightly rate for a penthouse suite is much higher than for a standard room.

So, in ocean shipping, you might expect booking a load of coal on a mammoth dry cargo vessel would cost a lot more than on a bulker carrying less than a third the volume. Or that a spot voyage deal for a supertanker carrying over twice the volume of crude oil, or a product tanker carrying over twice the...

Xi’s lockdowns will pull the rug out from under U.S. truckers this summer

Whenever the trucking market slows, truck drivers look for someone to blame. Normally, a slowdown is just a function of supply and demand. The market has too much dispatchable capacity compared to the total number of loads on any given day.

This summer, the trucking market could have one of its steepest declines in recent years and there is an entity that deserves much of the blame – the Chinese Communist Party and its draconian and inhumane lockdowns.

Chinese lockdowns will create shocks to American supply chains (but China is the biggest loser)

Shanghai's zero-COVID lockdown continues.

What happens in China doesn’t stay in China. And for American supply chains, that is usually a good thing. American businesses have become dependent on low-cost goods coming from Chinese suppliers. But in a post-COVID world that may be entering the Second Cold War, reliance on China means that American businesses are held hostage by an autocratic regime that seems oblivious to the damage it is doing to its own economy, much less the global one.

Since the earliest days of COVID-19, China has...

Viewpoint: It’s a tangled game of Twister for drayage in China

Drayage is a forward-looking indicator on the impact of “zero COVID” in the movement of trade in China. People are needed to drive the trucks. Roads must be open to reach factories and warehouses — which, of course, must also be open.

The drayage component of trade is essential, especially to ensure the fluid transportation of empty and full containers.

Without all of this, it doesn’t matter how many vessels are available.

The multiple testing hurdles and current stay-at-home orders in China...
