If globalization is really over, what happens to supply chains?

supply chain

Tariffs, COVID, port pileups, the Ever Given, the Russia-Ukraine war, mounting U.S.-China tensions — it seems like threats to world trade are the rule, not the exception. What does this mean to the future of global supply chains?

The positive view: Importers see the risks ahead and will act. They will preemptively revamp supply chains and become nimbler and more resilient. Economic benefits of globalization are too great to give up. Countries and companies will work around hurdles.

“No one can...

How China became the big winner of the COVID era

China

When news first broke of the COVID lockdown in Wuhan, the initial prediction was: The virus will cripple the economy of China, which is the engine of global trade, and that will be terrible for the shipping business.

Eighteen months and 3.9 million deaths later, the pandemic has had the opposite effect. Ships are full and, ironically, the country where the outbreak began is seeing the biggest and broadest economic upside.

Chinese exports are now much higher than they were before the outbreak,...

‘Just so big’: China’s outsize role in trade at Texas border crossings

Though well behind Mexico, China ranks second for international trade at the three largest United States-Mexico border crossings in Texas: Laredo, El Paso and Pharr.

Teclo Garcia, Laredo’s economic development director, said cellphones were the top imports from China through Port Laredo during 2020.

“We had $1.16 billion in total trade with...

Port Houston is positioning itself as a viable option for handling more containerized imports from Asia, thanks to congestion woes for importers on the West and East coasts.
