Port of Long Beach chief Mario Cordero on why rail and digitisation are key

This year has been something of a rollercoaster ride for the Californian port of Long Beach.
Throughput dipped 6.9% in the first half, to rebound at a double-digit clip in the following months to a record-setting 806,603 teu handled in October.
And, like the nearby port of Los Angeles, Long Beach has struggled with the surge of imports, which exceeded predictions.
The situation was exacerbated by shortages of chassis and export containers, as …

Container shortage crisis spreads to intra-Asia trades, driving prices higher

What a major shipping line called the “black swan” container shortage has hit intra-Asia trades as carriers prioritise transpacific profits.
With some 30m teu carried each year, the intra-Asia tradelane is the largest in the world, comprising around 100 port pairs.
Costs have traditionally been kept in check, there’s been less carrier consolidation than on deepsea trades, with major regional players competing for cargo.
However, these previously low-cost shipping routes are now seeing …

Trade war and tariffs fail to slow growing surge of US imports from China

US west coast ports, and rail and road links to the interior, are currently struggling with a surge of imports from Asia, mostly from China.
Despite all the fiery rhetoric and tariffs, the flow of goods from China to the US has not slowed down.
“We have not seen a major slowdown in business with China, it’s pretty steady, if not growing,” said Bob Imbriani, vice-president international services of forwarder Team Worldwide.
If …

China virus-safety demand the latest hurdle to a trade deal

The growing friction between China and the US and the transpacific trade talks are being given added piquancy by coronavirus pandemic and the growing fear in China that food imports could be a fresh source of infections. China now wants foreign exporters of meat and soybeans to sign pre-shipment certificates that show the products are not infected with Covid-19, according to Bloomberg. “China’s request isn’t a move aimed at imposing …

US transpacific imports from Asia decline for the first time in a decade

Chinese transpacific container shipments to the US declined by over 1m teu last year, representing a 10.8% volume drop and the first overall volume decrease on the route since 2009.
According to new analysis from Alphaliner, total volumes from Asia to the US fell 2.5%, as surging volumes out of other Asian countries failed to offset the declines from China and Hong Kong.
In 2009, Asia-US volumes fell by 15.3% due to …

The US-China trade pact signed this week, described by the US president as “a monster of a deal”, may have halted the trading tariff spat, but logistics providers and their clients have no cause to change strategy.
In Phase 1 of the trade deal, the US has suspended a 15% tariff on some $160bn of imports from China set for 15 December and halved tariffs on another $120bn of imports from …
