Tariff pause halves affected container trade for now

Clarksons’ analysis shows that US President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on import tariffs, except those from China, means that for now, 6% of global container trade, amounting to 29 million TEU, is affected, compared with 11% prior to the moratorium.

On 8 April, a day before additional tariffs were to be effected on US imports from every country, Trump offered a 90-day pause, except for Chinese imports, which have been slapped with elevated tariffs of 145%. Trump said the higher tariffs on China...

Container ship fleet now at 30 million TEUs

Fuelled by the newbuilding boom during the Covid-19-induced peak, the world container ship fleet reached 30 million TEUs in September, according to a report by shipbroking firm Clarksons.

Clarkson Research director Trevor Crowe noted that the boxship fleet has grown faster in recent years, compared to the early years of container shipping in the 1950s.

It was not until 1985 that the container ship fleet hit 1 million TEUs, and it took another 22 years for it to hit 10 million TEUs in 2007, and...

Container ship newbuilds reach post-Covid high

Boxship newbuilding orders have burst back into life as the Red Sea crisis has caused freight and charter rates to reach levels not seen since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Clarksons stated that 89 container vessels, amounting to 1.2 million TEUs, have been commissioned in June and the first half of July, the highest run-rate since the pandemic-induced boom, when 910,000 TEUs of new ships were ordered on a quarterly average between 2021 and 2022.

After a long period on the sidelines, charter owners have...

Emerging markets power 2024 container trade

Trade from the Far East to a bloc of developing economies, especially South America, Africa and the Middle East/Indian Subcontinent, has risen dramatically and has emerged as a key driver of global container trade, according to a new report from Clarksons.

The world’s largest shipbroker said that trade between the Far East and these developing economies was up 16% year-on-year in the first four months of the year, and showed a 30% growth compared to 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic...

Container port snarls now nearing Covid highs

Global container port congestion is now around 9 million TEU, close to the peak of 9.6 million TEU seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a Clarksons report.

The world’s largest shipbroker said in a report that the Red Sea crisis, which has seen container vessels detouring round the Cape of Good Hope, has added circa 12% to TEU-mile demand.

Clarksons analyst Trevor Crowe wrote: “It has been a better than expected year so far for trade volumes – this has helped drive markets to...

Boxship sales reach levels not seen since 2022

Clarksons’ April report said that secondhand boxship sales reached a two-year high in the first quarter of 2024, with 241,000 TEUs changing hands.

The world’s largest shipbroking group said that sales activity was pronounced in the 8,000 TEU to 12,000 TEU size range, accounting for 40% of all capacity sold.

Clarksons remarked, “Buyers in the Far East and Europe have scrambled to lock-in much sought-after tonnage in the larger sizes, where demand in the charter market has also been most intense.”
