Class 8 orders hit 14-month high in November

Class 8 truck orders continued to outpace the sluggish freight market with November orders surpassing 40,000 . It was the best month since September 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

November preliminary North American Class 8 net orders were 41,700 units, rising by 9,000 units from both October and year-ago November, ACT Research reported.

Even accounting for seasonal adjustment, orders surpassed 40,000 for the first time in more than a year.

Class 8 truck orders hit year’s peak in September

With 2024 orderboards open, fleets placed the highest number of Class 8 bookings this year in September. But they know they can pull the plug if necessary.

Preliminary Class 8 net orders were 36,800 units, up 67% over August, ACT Research reported. Rival analytics firm FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged orders at 31,200. Both numbers fell far short of the record 53,700 orders in September 2022.

With depressed spot rates and a cooling consumer economy, some of the orders could be a hedge...

August Class 8 truck orders reach highest level since February

Preliminary net Class 8 truck orders reached 19,000 units in August, 9% below a year ago. But they were the highest in six months.

Bookings should begin to rise in September as the 2024 order season accelerates. But it’s hard to know how much pent-up demand remains from the pandemic and two years of supply disruption and whether that detracts from new orders.

“Despite rising order activity, the year-over-year comparisons will look horrible through November due to record order activity in the...

Loaded and Rolling: Safety officials want brakes on braking mandate

Safety officials want brakes on braking mandate

(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

Proposed rulemaking on automatic emergency braking (AEB) introduced in June by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is getting more pushback from a coalition of state law enforcement officials and brake manufacturers that argue more dialogue is needed before moving forward.

To illustrate some of the math that impacts government rulemaking, both the...

(Source: J.B. Hunt, chart: FreightWaves)

Truckload and multimodal carrier J.B. Hunt told analysts on an earnings call Tuesday that it’s still too early to tell how the 2023 peak season for freight will turn out. The company noted its Q2 declines across the board in revenue, operating income and an operating ratio that fell from 90.8% in Q2 of 2022 to 91.4% this year against a backdrop of lower volumes and softening freight demand.

April Class 8 truck orders tank but OEMs have ample backlogs

A dearth of Class 8 truck orders in April is more technical than meaningful. Major OEMs express optimism about delivering plenty of new equipment to ease pandemic-related pent-up demand.

Preliminary North America net orders  were 11,600 units, down 27% from a year ago and off 39% compared to March, according to ACT Research. FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged preliminary orders at 12,050 units, down 20% year over year and 37% from March.
