New partnership to promote CO2 capture technology

Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM), the world’s largest testing facility for carbon capture, and DNV GL have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver advisory and verification services for CO2 capture technology. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the only available technology for mitigating climate change in certain industries such as cement production and the use of oil and gas.

Under the agreement, the partners will offer advisory and verification services at TCM’s facilities on...

Port of San Diego prepares for future sea level rise

The Port of San Diego is preparing for the future sea level rise and has taken practical measures to mitigate this problem. Namely, at the location of a future hotel and convention center in Chula Vista, the Port trucked enough soil to raise the ground level by 14 feet. The fill dirt project started in August and finished last week.

These projects are being constructed under the port’s Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan (CVBMP), which covers one stretch of the 34 miles of the waterfront.

This work...

Eight game-changing strategies to halve GHG emissions by 2030

In line with a general sensitivity on climate change, a report published earlier in 2018 revealed the potential for all sectors of global economy –energy, food and agriculture, industry, buildings and transport – to halve greenhouse gas emissions by around 2030. Stronger policies, the digital revolution and greater climate leadership are necessary to accelerate the economic transformation, say the authors.

The report, launched by Christiana Figueres and global sustainability researcher Johan...

China launched satellite to research oceans environment

China launched a new marine satellite into orbit earlier this month, aiming to enhance the understanding of maritime waters and climate change. Specifically, the satellite will provide with data for research on the global oceans’ environment.

The satellite HY-1C’s mission is to monitor ocean colour and water temperatures, in order to supply researchers with data for better understanding the oceans’ environment, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense...

IPCC: Limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires rapid and far-reaching change

Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said in a new report, noting that limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to 2°C could go hand in hand with ensuring a more sustainable and equitable society.

The Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C was created after invitation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) when it adopted the...

NOAA: Global warming to boost major hurricanes

A new NOAA research looks at the devastating 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. It notes that if similar weather conditions happen in the future, it’s likely the number of major hurricanes to increase by two in a similar active year at the end of century. Climate warming would be the cause of this.

Last year’s six major Atlantic hurricanes included hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria that caused loss of life in communities across Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. The three hurricanes caused an...

How climate change can affect Europe

The impact of climate change is already impacting the ecosystems, economic sectors and people’s health and well-being in Europe. In order to present how climate change can affect Europe, the European Parliament created an infographic depicting the impacts of climate change in each region of the continent.

According to the infographic all regions are affected, but not in the same way. The effects have been mostly negative, such as in the Mediterranean where more heat extremes and less rain are...
