Legal noose tightens around MSC Gayane drug gang (with free court docs)

container ship

A third seafarer has pled guilty in the spectacular plot to use a large container ship and many of its crew to transport massive volumes of cocaine from South America to Europe.

Authorities swarmed the vessel, the MSC Gayane, during a June 2019 call in Philadelphia. In one of the largest drug busts in U.S. history, they found almost 20 tons of cocaine worth over $1 billion.

To put that in perspective, the cocaine haul weighed as much as three adult male African elephants.

Cracking the case of the containerized cocaine

cocaine

The drug bust aboard the container-ship MSC Gayane on June 17, 2019, was spectacular in every sense: the largest drug seizure in U.S. history, over a billion dollars’ worth of cocaine, a ship operated by one of the world’s largest carriers and owned by one of America’s largest banks, a conspiracy among the crew, nighttime liaisons off the South American coast, a globe-spanning trafficking network … it sounded like a maritime version of “Scarface.”

A year later, the saga continues to unfold.
