Aided by Colombo diversions, DP World Cochin lifts transshipment volumes

Global terminal operator DP World is said to have invested about US$600 million in the Cochin terminal, better known as Vallarpadam, betting in large part on the vast volume of Indian containerised cargo usually transhipped over Colombo Port in Sri Lanka.

But the decade-long effort produced little measurable transshipment cargo gains for the alternative gateway, a shortcoming DP World attributed to high port charges for mainline operators seeking to add direct calls at Cochin.

Second phase of Colombo East Container Terminal construction begins

President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa and prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have announced the commencement of construction work for the second phase of the East Container Terminal (ECT) at the Colombo Port.

Construction of the terminal, which will be conducted in three phases in a project of US$510 million, is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

Colombo master plan to boost port’s performance

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has great plans for the future and they will come into fruition with the implementation of the National Master Plan for ports in the country, SLPA Chairman Kavan Ratnayake told the media at the launch of the Colombo International Logistics Conference (CILC).

Port of Colombo marks significant volumes-increase in April

The Colombo Port container volumes indicates an increase in the month of April 2019 by 9.1% compared to the same period last year.

Together with the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) and the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), the Port of Colombo’s cumulative Volume has increased by 5.9%.

China to strongly support Colombo port

The state-owned Sri Lanka Ports Authority said on Thursday, March 14, that it would purchase three ship-to-shore gantry cranes from China for its deep water terminal at the Colombo Port to handle bigger container ships.

The Government Information Department said the government had approved a proposal by Minister of Ports, Shipping and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayaka to buy the cranes for the Jaya Container Terminal from China’s Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC).
