CVSA data on International Roadcheck confirms that many drivers stayed home
Just-released data on this year’s International Roadcheck results add to other indications that drivers in 2024 were more likely to stay home during the three-day compliance crackdown than they were in 2023.
The evidence that the annual Roadcheck “vacation” may have had a bigger impact this year than in recent years first came in data from the Outbound Tender Rejection Index (OTRI) in SONAR during May, which showed a clear increase in that benchmark. OTRI reflects freight that is tendered under...
Dates set for International Roadcheck: May 14-16
International Roadcheck will be May 14-16 this year, a few days earlier on the calendar than it was in 2023.
Legend holds that many truck drivers park their rigs for a few days to avoid stepped-up police activity during the event, which the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), which administers Roadcheck, describes as a “high-visibility, high-volume commercial motor vehicle inspection and regulatory compliance enforcement initiative that takes place over three days in Canada, Mexico and...

Safety officials on automatic emergency braking mandate: Not so fast
WASHINGTON — State law enforcement officials and brake manufacturers want more interaction between the trucking industry and federal regulators before the government considers public comments on a rule to mandate automatic emergency braking (AEB) on heavy trucks.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), whose members include state police and highway patrols, and the Commercial Vehicle Brake Manufacturers Council (CVBMC), a group under CVSA that represents OEMs, contend that the...
FMCSA considering limiting scope of emergency waivers
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing to roll back the relief automatically given to commercial truckers and trucking companies when disaster strikes.
The change, which would alter a rule established in 1992, would mean that during a regional emergency caused by weather or other supply chain disruptions, drivers and carriers would be exempt only from daily and weekly limits on driving time and not other requirements that are also exempt in current emergency waivers.
Those...

Percentage of Brake Safety Week out-of-service orders holds steady in US
Results from Brake Safety Week conducted this year by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance came in at numbers close to the figures from 2021.
The number of vehicles inspected in the U.S. from Aug. 21-27 was 34,402, a significant increase from the 28,694 checked last year. But the out-of-service (OOS) violation rate barely budged — 13.5% last year to 13.6% in 2022.
Meanwhile, there was a notable increase in Canada, where inspections resulted in OOS violations coming in at 17.8% compared to 15.4%...
Truck brake-light exemption denied despite industry support
An application from a company specializing in pulsating brake lights for trucks has been denied by federal regulators despite strong support from the trucking industry.
Fayetteville, Arkansas-based Intellistop Inc., which makes a device that prompts preexisting brake lights to pulse briefly for added safety when brakes are engaged (see video, below), had sought an industrywide exemption from federal regulations that require all commercial vehicles be equipped with steady-burning brake lamps.
Intel...

FMCSA considering electronic IDs for all trucks
A rulemaking ordered under the Obama administration will consider whether all trucks should be outfitted with a unique ID, overhauling the way trucks are inspected.
The advanced notice of proposed rulemaking is to be published in the Federal Register on Friday. It is in response to a request in February 2015 by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to reconsider a similar request by CVSA that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration denied in 2013.
In November 2015 under FMCSA...

What should drivers expect at a weigh station stop?
Unless a truck is equipped with a bypass preclearance device, most states require commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds to stop at every weigh station along the truck’s route. What can a driver expect at a station?
In addition to rolling over a weigh-in-motion scale to ensure the truck is operating under federal and/or state weight limits, drivers should be prepared for some level of inspection. And it usually starts as soon as the truck enters the facility.
“When you’re reporting to a...
