How carriers can identify log falsification

Hours-of-service violations are fairly easy to detect on a driver’s log. After all, ELDs are designed to keep track of drivers’ hours and will flag instances when they exceeded their allotted driving time.

However, just because the ELD system did not detect an HOS violation doesn’t mean it’s not there, concealed by log falsification.

The issue of log falsification isn’t new. It was prevalent both in the days of paper logs and still today in the ELD era. What has changed is the way drivers falsify...

The building blocks of a compliant safety program

For all motor carriers, safety compliance is one of the most basic necessities for success, but navigating the ins and outs is far from simple due to the extensive nature of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.

Each carrier needs a safety program that allows them to withstand Department of Transportation (DOT) roadside inspections and carrier investigations. Last year alone, over 85,000 federal roadside inspections took place, which is the most since 2019, and there...

ELD transfer violation could cause snowball effect on CSA scores

Up until December, motor carriers’ Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores weren’t impacted by a common hours-of-service violation: A driver not being able to transfer logs to a law enforcement officer during roadside inspections.

But now, the once zero-point violation could cost carriers at least three points and potentially more.

“This is pretty significant because what happens here is not only can we get hit with that one violation, but that could lead to several other violations,...

4 steps to improving compliance and operations in 2023

Compliance and operations work hand in hand, and this year, fleets have put improving in both categories on their New Year’s resolutions lists.

It’s no wonder why.

In 2022, state and federal transportation departments conducted a total of 12,234 safety investigations, both on-site and off-site, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Approximately 95% of those investigations resulted in violations.

While the number of investigations and high percentage of violations is...

Is an inefficient hiring process pushing away drivers?

The driver shortage continues to plague the trucking industry, but is an inefficient and outdated hiring process partially to blame?

With the industry still short 78,000, according to an estimate by the American Trucking Associations, the quicker companies can fill those seats, the better. But, according to Joel Sitak, CEO of Foley, a Connecticut-based specialty screening and compliance software provider, the hiring process for drivers is usually two weeks.

At most companies — for applicants and...

How has state marijuana legalization affected trucking?

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is asking carriers a series of questions on safety and other concerns in relation to state-level marijuana legalization.

In 2019, ATRI released a study on recreational marijuana laws’ possible effects on the trucking industry. At the time, 11 states had legalized marijuana. Since then, that number has nearly doubled to 20, prompting the new study.

The original study specifically looked at safety issues brought on by an increase in passenger...

Navigating the modern driver hiring process

Truck driving is one of the largest professions in the U.S., with 3.5 million people strong, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But despite this, most trucking companies are constantly searching for experienced and reliable candidates.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there are approximately 259,000 job openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers each year, and everybody in the transportation industry, especially hiring managers, knows filling those positions isn’t easy.

Compet...
