Box troubles still hitting forwarders in China and India as prices keep rising

As container prices in China and India continue to surge, local forwarders are “busier than ever” trying to secure space.
Leasing platform Container xChange said there were “few signs” of shortages being resolved, highlighting steep increases in the prices of new and used equipment since last year.
“In China, average prices for used 20ft containers increased 94% between November and March,” the company said.
At $2,028 for a 20ft, Dalian is now the most expensive …

‘Nightmare’ for hauliers as demand swamps landside services at port of Liverpool

Peak vessel demand at the UK port of Liverpool last week brought severe landside delays and nightmarish waits for hauliers at the T1 terminal, according to a spokesperson for Peel Ports.
Feedback to The Loadstar this morning from hauliers suggested turnaround times for vehicles at T1 was “still very slow”, with the problem appearing to be a lack of straddle carriers to serve the landside operation.
The spokesperson said: “Extended haulier wait …

Shippers could avoid costly D&D fees and shortages by using their own boxes

Shippers could ease their supply chain logjams, overcome box shortages and insulate themselves from huge demurrage and detention charges by using their own containers or leasing them, according to a report compiled by Container xChange.
“Greater use of shipper-owned containers (SOCs) can empower forwarders and NVOCCs, and reduce container shortages, shipping costs and risks,” said the lead contributor to the report, logistics consultant Wolfgang Lehmacher.

Shippers blame carriers for entirely predictable US container graveyard

Shippers are not buying into the box shortage paradigm, that the dearth of containers in Asia is caused by the pandemic, presented by shipping lines and others, with one shipper telling Container News, “Containers don’t have a life of their own, the lines manage their box fleets as well as their ships.”

Shippers believe that the cause of the container shortage and the spike in charges is the lines themselves, “Shippers are being charged astronomic rates for the lines’ own incompetence,” said one...

Container shortages the biggest disrupter: where are all the empty boxes?

Some container vessels have been sailing from Asia to Europe under-utilised in recent weeks due to an acute shortage of empty boxes.
A carrier source told The Loadstar: “We have had to sail light a few times recently as there are just not enough boxes at depots [in China] to meet the demand.”
All carriers report severe shortages of the popular 40ft high-cubes (HCs) at their depots, and there has also been a run …

Container pickup charges increase in China

Pickup charges for container users are becoming more expensive across Chinese ports due to increasing container imbalances, according to the latest Container xChange report.

European and the US importers currently struggle to return empty containers to Asia, according to Container Availability Index data. As a result, these ports suffer from increasing dwell times and port congestion.

On the other hand, carriers in Chinese ports are setting new regulations to control the imbalances. The German...

Asian shippers hit by double-whammy of lack of boxes and capacity squeeze

Shippers in Asia face a double-whammy of equipment shortages and tight shipping capacity that is driving an unrelenting spike in short-term contract rates.
Vessels to North Europe and the US west coast are reportedly “fully booked for two to three weeks after Golden Week”, according to one Shanghai-based NVOCC source.
“Additionally, some of the carriers just do not have any 40ft high-cube containers at their depots, so even if we could get …
