Container availability drops across Asia prior to shipping peak

New blog from container tracking and exchange platform ContainerXchange, with some data to illuminate recent reports of growing equipment shortages in Asia. The firm’s Container Availability Index suggests stocks of 20ft boxes has reached critical lows in Port Klang and Shanghai, although there is some good news in that supplies of 40ft and 40ft high-cube boxes are expected to increase in coming weeks in the Chinese gateway, at least.

Container lines on track for US$15bn pandemic windfall

Runaway freight rates in the second and third quarters have had analysts scrambling to re-write doomsayer forecasts published as recently as June to predict what promises to become the industry’s most profitable year on record.

Soaring rates from Asia to the US and signs of recovery on other key trade lanes have pushed Lars Jensen, co-founder of the consulting group, Sea-Intelligence, to re-model his forecast for overall industry profitability for the second time in two months, floating a...

European exporters still up against it, but equipment shortages are easing

Blank sailings, escalating freight rates and a shortage of equipment continue to hobble European exporters.
Shippers to Asia and the US are facing lengthy delays and uncertainty for container bookings as the knock-on effect of short-notice carrier blanking programmes plays havoc with supply chains.
As a consequence, rates have soared, particularly to Asia where they have doubled in the past year, and in some instances are being increased after containers have been …

Port Congestion: A Threat to the Industry? -Container xChange-

Boxing clever can help reduce the growing cost of empty container repositioning

Costly empty container repositioning has been exacerbated by the US-China trade war, as more empty boxes than ever before head back to Asia.
However, artificial intelligence (AI) and the digitisation of one-way container leasing could help alleviate the shipping industry’s US$20bn empty box problem.
