Trans-Pacific contract rates slip from peak but still historic

Finally, a bit of good news — or at least, less-bad news — for beleaguered U.S. importers. The latest data shows a moderate retreat in the year-on-year increase in long-term contract rates.

Norway-based Xeneta collects long-term contract rate data, using millions of inputs per month from shippers and non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOCCs).

Hapag-Lloyd shelling out more than half a billion dollars for containers

Hapag-Lloyd has ordered 150,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in an effort to combat slow turn times. The cost — about $550 million — represents one of the German ocean carrier’s largest container orders ever.

Import surges at U.S. ports, labor shortages caused by COVID-19 outbreaks and severe port congestion, particularly on the West Coast, all have contributed to a slow turnaround of containers to be sent empty back to Asia to be refilled.

Repaired MSC Ariane set to resume voyage to LA

The MSC Ariane, which diverted to Japan for repairs, is expected to resume sailing for the Port of Los Angeles on Wednesday. 

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. said the Ariane “had an engine issue due to bad quality of fuel” on April 2 while en route from Xiamen, China, to LA.

MSC did not say what repairs were done in Wakayama, Japan. 

The MSC Ariane now is expected to anchor in California’s San Pedro Bay on May 1. “The estimated berthing date will depend upon the congestion in the Los Angeles area,”...
