Containerships ‒ bulkers: Θα διατηρήσουν τη δυναμική τους το 2022;

Seroka: National Guard is ‘backup plan’ for LA port congestion

Three large container ships with black hulls and MSC painted on the side tied up at a large wharf with cranes.

The Port of Long Beach reported Thursday it handled 8.6 million shipping units through November, smashing its all-timeannual volume record before the year is done amid relentless consumer demand for imported goods. Next door in Los Angeles, the port director said using the National Guard to evacuate containers is still an option if more cargo lingers beyond its move-by date and terminal congestion worsens again.

Officials at the San Pedro Bay ports this week trumpeted how the threat of hefty...

Biden-backed plan to clear California port congestion stalls

“We’re starting to see some traction,” Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka proclaimed on Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. “Those aging containers are down by 50% over the last six weeks.”

Seroka was referring to long-dwelling containers targeted by a dramatic, highly controversial fee plan backed by the Biden administration. Or rather, a plan that threatens to levy a fee that no one, including the ports, ever wants to be levied.

The fee on long-dwelling containers was set to begin on Nov....

Port of Vancouver ship backlog hits 60

A black-and-white satellite radar image shows some of ships waiting at anchorages near the Port of Vancouver.

The Port of Vancouver hit a grim milestone this week as the number of ships waiting for a berth reached 60 despite the resumption of rail service.

It happened Tuesday night, and included nine container, 17 grain and 16 coal vessels. The number had dipped to 57 as of late Wednesday.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, in an operations update Wednesday, reported that “anchorage demand continues to exceed capacity” as Canada’s largest port continues to battle the impacts of the flooding and...

‘Unprecedented’ import volume propels South Carolina Ports to all-time record

A photograph of rows of intermodal containers.

South Carolina Ports reached another record in November, achieving an all-time high for the number of containers handled in a single month.

November’s volumes, which account for both boxes measured in twenty-foot equivalent units as well as pier containers, beat the previous monthly container record set in March.

SC Ports handled 250,711 TEUs in November at the Wando Welch, North Charleston and Hugh K. Leatherman terminals at the Port of Charleston, the South Carolina Ports Authority said. The...

Port of Savannah ramps up container capacity as cargo delays ease

A parcel of land being cleared to expand an existing container storage area.

Congestion at the Port of Savannah continued to improve last week, and an infusion of 1.6 million shipping units of yard capacity in the next six months should further enhance cargo flow, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.

The number of container vessels at anchor off the Atlantic coast port waiting for a berth fell to 13 as of Monday, down from 15 a week ago and 23 on Nov. 2, as temporary off-dock storage sites and customers clearing cargo more quickly freed space for new shipments to be...

LA/Long Beach delay port congestion fees again

Gantry cranes lifting containers onto stacks at a port.

Port officials in Los Angeles and Long Beach have delayed imposing controversial congestion fees for a fourth consecutive week, increasing the likelihood that the fees will never be assessed.

The port authorities said the excess storage surcharge has been postponed until Dec. 13.

The fees have had their intended effect of getting users to clear long-stored containers from terminals, according to port officials. Containers that dwell more than nine days for local truck drayage and more than six...
