Qantas Freight on Tuesday began flying the world’s first Airbus A321 passenger-to-freighter conversion aircraft for Australia Post, which is expanding its fleet to meet demand for e-commerce shipments.

Luxembourg-based Vallair leased the aircraft to Qantas Airways’ cargo division, which plans to add one or two more A321s to support Australia Post. Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW), a joint venture between Airbus and ST Engineering in Singapore, did the conversion work for Vallair and confirmed the...

Why the A321 converted freighter looks like a hot ticket (with video)

A plain white jet with a new cut-in cargo door outlined in frame takes off. It's an A321 converted freighter on its first test flight.

Questions about whether the new Airbus A321 converted freighter could generate orders and catch up to the Boeing 737-800, which has a three-year head start in the express delivery market, are quickly dissipating.

Aircraft trading and leasing company Vallair announced Tuesday that Miami-based Global Crossing Airlines (GlobalX) has signed a prospective deal to lease 10 converted A321 freighters, with first delivery expected by the third quarter of 2021. All 10 are expected to be in revenue service...

A red-and-white jet comes in for landing with wheels retracted. 21 Air is a small cargo carrier that flies planes for DHL.

A small all-cargo airline is taking a unique approach to add capacity without the risk of ownership by entering a joint venture with a leasing company for passenger aircraft with the seats removed and contracting with a third-party carrier to fly shipments on its behalf.

21 Air, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, has been flying under its own license for four years. It owns and operates two Boeing 767-200 converted cargo planes with a 42-ton payload.

Like any small business, it faces the...

A plane sitting outside a hangar with patches on fuselage where modified doors and other changes are being made.

Australia’s Qantas Airways is scheduled this month to receive the world’s first Airbus A321 converted from a passenger configuration into a freighter.
