Port of Newcastle has commissioned two new mobile harbour cranes with an outreach of 54 metres and a lifting capacity of 104 tonnes.

Port CEO, Craig Carmody, said the $A32.4-million crane investment marks a significant increase in an expanded and improved container, break-bulk and project cargo handling capability for customers at Port of Newcastle.

Port of Newcastle has welcomed the arrival of two new Liebherr mobile harbour cranes earlier this week.

The German-built LHM 550 cranes sailed into Newcastle Harbour onboard general cargo ship UHL Fighter, after leaving the Port of Rostock in late June.

Overseas competition regulators block Konecranes / Cargotec merger

The marriage between crane companies Cargotec and Konecranes has been called off after the UK Competition & Markets Authority blocked the merger while the U.S. Department of Justice threatened to sue.

According to the UK CMA, the two companies offer a range of container handling equipment and services to port terminals and other industrial customers. They announced their proposed $5 billion nuptials in October 2020.
