Brexit sails from one storm in a port to another: want to talk about it?

The decision by the UK’s Department for Transport earlier this week to cancel the contracts awarded to DFDS and Brittany Ferries to run a series of extra cross-channel ro-ro sailings after 29 March – the date the UK was due to leave the EU – brings to an end another sorry, chaotic chapter in a story depressingly full of them.
The original strategy of the government in securing some extra vessel …

Chris Grayling cancels extra ferry contracts, with a £50m bill for taxpayers

Well that’s the end of that. But the cancellation of extra ferry sailings by the UK government will come at a cost – and the £50m is on top of £33m compensation awarded to Eurotunnel and claimed by P&O Ferries. Does it, however, portend to wider implications? “With the date of Brexit pushed back from 29 March to 31 October, the contracts have been cancelled, possibly indicating the government is …

Taxpayer-funded additional ferries for ‘no-deal’ Brexit already running

Additional ferry services laid on for a no-deal Brexit have begun operating, despite the fact that the UK has not yet left the EU, and the government is hastily trying to recoup its investment.
Late last year, Brittany Ferries and DFDS, alongside the ill-fated Seaborne Freight, were contracted by the Department for Transport (DfT) to provide extra capacity from 29 March to offset any disruption from the expected resumption of customs …

Dover could cope with a 50% increase in processing times, post-Brexit, report claims

Predictions of miles of truck queues in the approaches to Dover after a hard Brexit are numerous, but a new report from Drewry Maritime Advisors claims the UK ro-ro gateway has considerable spare capacity.
The report calculated the port capacity of Dover, with current and predicted customs capacity and the vessel capacity of the two ro-ro operators, DFDS and P&O Ferries, and concludes that operations at the port could continue relatively …

Arklow Shipping was backing Seaborne, laying plans for no-deal ferry services

As lawyers for the UK government and cross-Channel fixed link operator Eurotunnel met in the High Court to determine whether the government acted illegally in its award of £100m-plus contracts to three ferry companies to provide extra vessel capacity in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the Department for Transport has released correspondence in a bid to ease the pressure on secretary of state Chris Grayling.
Mr Grayling was widely criticised …

Calais under fire from haulage association claiming port won’t be ready for Brexit

The port of Calais has come under fire from the UK’s Road Haulage Association (RHA) over its preparedness for Brexit and claims it won’t perform additional vehicle checks.
During BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, port president Jean-Marc Puissesseau said Calais would not be conducting checks beyond those for food, livestock and migrants.
Chief executive of the RHA Richard Burnett said this did not chime with what the association had been told during …

Port of Ramsgate/Seaborne Freight ferry service ‘won’t be fit for purpose’

A deal between Ramsgate port and prospective cross-channel ferry operator Seaborne Freight is expected to be confirmed “imminently”, the operator told The Loadstar yesterday.
Seaborne services are slated to provide additional cross-Channel capacity and an alternative to Dover, which may witness major congestion in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
But a former seafarer, with 45 years’ experience, 25 of them on Dover-Calais ferries, told The Loadstar he did not see how the …

‘Impossible’ for Belgian port to be ready for Seaborne Brexit service

Ostend’s mayor has said the Belgian port will not be ready for a new ferry service in time for Brexit. Bart Tommelein told the BBC it was “impossible” for the port to be ready, adding that he would be travelling to Ramsgate, the UK port involved in the prospective new service, next week to discuss the matter.
His comments followed beleaguered UK transport secretary Chris Grayling again defending the deal he …
