Trucking electrification throttled by excessive ownership costs

Battery electric trucks face cost headwinds

Recent releases by Ryder System and Knight-Swift highlight the growing awareness of the added costs required for fleets that face increased pressure to transition to electric vehicles. A major challenge for long-haul trucking is cost, and current incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act only cover up to a maximum of $40,000 for commercial clean vehicles weighing over 14,000 pounds. A new Class 8 battery electric...

CVSA International Roadcheck just around the corner

Every year the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducts International Roadcheck. This year, it’s scheduled for May 14-16 across Canada and Mexico as well as the U.S. The program typically has one main focus each year in addition to making sure vehicles are roadworthy. But this year, the CVSA has chosen two focus areas, in addition to a normal inspection: tractor protection systems and alcohol and controlled substances.

On this episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!?, Mark Barlar, director of DOT...

Loaded and Rolling: International Roadcheck is next week; shipping execs weigh in on rates

CVSA International Roadcheck is next week

(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is holding its annual International Roadcheck next Tuesday through Thursday, with a focus on anti-lock braking systems and cargo securement. This high-volume, 72-hour enforcement blitz will see some potential violators taking a vacation, often causing localized capacity surges in freight markets as fewer drivers are willing to haul freight for fear of landing a violation and...

Heads up: International Roadcheck is imminent

Drivers take note: International Roadcheck is May 17-19.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) annual inspection is only a few days away, but that’s just enough time to take care of a few loose ends.

Reliance Partners Vice President of Safety Brian Runnels encourages drivers to be a bit more thorough with their pre-trip inspections and to take a couple seconds more to check the air in their tires or take a look at their brake linings to save them from a handful of violations.

This year,...

Getting your fleet in shape for Roadcheck 2022

Roadcheck checklist

Fleets across North America annually fret about the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Roadcheck event. This year’s event will take place May 17-19, and if past experiences have taught the industry anything, it is that some percentage — perhaps as high as 20% — of vehicles and/or drivers will find themselves sitting on the side of the road following an out-of-service order.

“Roadcheck should not be a cause for concern,” explained Tom Bray, senior industry business adviser for J....

Inside the mind of a truck inspector

A police officer inspects a truck.

Constable Gianni Parmigiano of the Peel Regional Police was on patrol in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga when a tractor-trailer caught his eye. Something seemed a little odd with the rear license plate.

So Parmigiano, also a commercial vehicle inspector certified by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), decided to pull the truck over. It didn’t take long to see why the license plate had drawn his notice.

“It was written in black Magic Marker,” Parmigiano said.

Parmigiano is one of...

Roadcheck 2021: The top 10 things fleets should do today

Editor’s Note: This is Part 2 of a two-part series on International Roadcheck Week on what fleets and drivers can do to ensure a clean inspection process. You can read Part 1 here.

As the trucking industry prepares for the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck Week, set for May 4-6 this year, there are a few truths fleets always face: Preventable violations will occur, and fewer drivers will be on the roads as they try to avoid the inspector’s gaze.

First, the...
