COLUMN | Looking to the future: Petrobras newbuilds; James Fisher; Saudi Arabia’s NEOM plans; TotalEnergies and Sapura; wind bust timing [Offshore Accounts]

“Brazil is the country of the future,” goes the cliché that the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig declared in 1941 as the opening line of his book Brazil, Land of the Future. Zweig wrote in exile there, and a year later, he and his wife deliberately killed themselves with a drug overdose. Brazilians then began joking […]

COLUMN | Quick updates: PSVs changing hands; subsea newbuilds; Guyana booming; rigs fixing higher [Offshore Accounts]

Money is being made in offshore once again, but tragically lives are also being lost unnecessarily. Earlier this week, we examined how Perenco’s dysfunctional safety culture in Gabon, leading to six people dead or lost in an explosion. This is a sad backdrop for an industry booming at last. Stop...

COLUMN | Where the wind blows, part 2: Shell, Cadeler, HEA Energy, Cyan Renewables, Edda Wind, Norwind and Norside [Offshore Accounts]

In Part One last week, we looked at the paradox of offshore wind, a segment that is growing without profit for many players. This contrasts with offshore oil and gas, which has shrunk but has become intensely profitable for rig and vessel operators, and for the oil companies themselves. Whereas offshore oil and gas companies […]

COLUMN | Canada loses control of its shipbuilding budget: Seaspan, Davie and Irving turn up the heat on Ottawa [Offshore Accounts]

The sentiments of American singer-songwriter Teddy Swims on his single Lose Control seems a most appropriate soundtrack for Canada this week, especially as it comes from his debut album, the wonderfully titled I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). We have project blow-outs, schedule blow-outs, and some massive delays to report in Canada. Shipbuilding is […]

Singapore Consortium To Develop Electric Harbour Craft Operations

Credit : shipping telegraph

Asia’s first pure-play offshore wind vessel owner Cyan Renewables announced the launch of a green energy consortium, together with six other companies, to jointly design and develop electric harbour craft operations in Singapore, reports shipping telegraph.

Singapore targets for new harbour crafts to be fully decarbonised from 2030, but it currently lacks commercially viable solutions to enable such a transition, Cyan said.

Never believe what a company’s managers tell you. Always verify yourself, especially if the company is headquartered in Monaco and is run by a management team with a past reputation for underperformance in the offshore sector. Who could we be talking about? Imagine a company where the management team paid themselves a US$30 million bonus […]
