EMSA drone to monitor vessel emissions in the Strait of Gibraltar area

The Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda will monitor sulfur and nitrogen emissions from ships using the European Maritime Safety Agency’s (EMSA) remotely piloted aircraft operating in the Strait of Gibraltar area.

The initiative builds on experience gained during a similar operation in which the aircraft’s special detector capabilities were used to monitor emissions.

In addition to checking the compliance of passing ships with pollutants, flights can also be directed to...

Hapag-Lloyd to use advanced biofuel for DHL shipments

Hapag-Lloyd will use advanced biofuels for the transport of DHL shipments after the signing of an agreement between DHL Global Forwarding and the German box carrier.

Hapag-Lloyd will ship 18,000 TEU of DHL’s volume using advanced biofuels, an action that will have an impact on reducing 14,000 tonnes of Well-to-Wake CO2 emissions, which are all direct emissions from vessel operation including upstream emissions.

Shipping decarbonisation would add just 8 cents to a pair of Nikes, says new study

Ships that use renewable hydrogen as fuel will lead to almost zero increases in final consumer prices, according to a new study.

For example, on the cost of decarbonising European shipping, running all-green hydrogen-based ships (e-fuels) would add less than US$0.10 to the price of a pair of trainers and up to US$8,4 for a refrigerator.

The analysis of shipments from Shenzhen in China to Europe disproves the shipping industry’s argument that ambitious “green” measures will be prohibitively...
