Rolls-Royce MTU large engines now approved for HVO and IMO III

Rolls-Royce reports that its MTU Series 1163 and 8000 large engines in all cylinder variants – 16 and 20V in each case – in the power range between 4,800 and 10,000 kW are now available with SCR systems for compliance IMO III emission requirements. This enables ship operators to enter Emission Control Areas (ECA), for example in the Baltic and North Sea and off the North American coast. Italian ferry operator Liberty Lines yesterday commissioned the 39.5 meter, 251 passenger Vittorio Morace, the world’s first hybrid fast ferry in its category and size. Built by Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon and designed by Incat Crowther, it is powered by an MTU hybrid propulsion system from Rolls-Royce and has a speed of over 30 and has been classified as a “Green Plus” ship by classification society RINA.
