‘Cold ironing’ can reduce emissions at UK ports, but government must help

The UK ports industry has called on the government to help it reduce carbon emissions at port facilities by building up infrastructure to deliver shore power to ships at berth.
For years, ports around the world have looked at how to provide shore power to ships at berth – known as cold ironing – an initiative first pioneered in Los Angeles’ West Basin Container Terminal in 2004, as the city struggled …

Whitehall unveils financial support package for British ferry industry

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced financial support for the UK’s ferry sector, including £17m ($21m) for services between the mainland and Northern Ireland.
The move comes days after a dispute between P&O Ferries and the port of Liverpool owner, Peel Ports, over a reported unpaid bill of £600,000, which saw a ferry detained at the quay and led to fears of a breakdown of cross-Irish Sea freight capacity.

Brexit sails from one storm in a port to another: want to talk about it?

The decision by the UK’s Department for Transport earlier this week to cancel the contracts awarded to DFDS and Brittany Ferries to run a series of extra cross-channel ro-ro sailings after 29 March – the date the UK was due to leave the EU – brings to an end another sorry, chaotic chapter in a story depressingly full of them.
The original strategy of the government in securing some extra vessel …

Transport secretary Grayling ‘acted illegally’ in awarding Brexit ferry contracts

UK transport secretary Chris Grayling may have broken the law by awarding contracts for ro-ro services in the event of a no-deal Brexit, by not having first put them up for public tender.
The Transport Select Committee is investigating allegations that the situation did not meet the criteria for an emergency exemption, in breach of both EU and UK law.
On 28 December, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced it had contracted …
