Transportation and logistics provider Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN) announced Tuesday after the market close that its board has approved a planned transition in leadership.

The company’s founder and former chairman, Clarence L. “CL” Werner, has been named chairman emeritus “in recognition of his longstanding leadership.”

Derek Leathers, CEO and president, has been appointed chairman of the board. He took on the role of vice chairman when the succession plan was announced nearly a year ago.

Recapping the announcement of founder CL Werner’s decision to step down as executive chairman of the board effective May 31, transportation and logistics provider Werner Enterprises (NASDAQ: WERN) offered additional insight into the founder’s legacy.

Transportation and logistics provider Werner Enterprises’ (NASDAQ: WERN) announced in an after market close press release on June 2 that founder and executive chairman of the board Clarence L. Werner stepped down from the executive chair seat on May 31.

Werner will remain as chairman through his current term, which expires in May 2021. At that time, the company expects he will become Chairman Emeritus.
