DNV, HD Hyundai Mipo and KSOE sign MoU on digital twins

DNV has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE). The focus is on developing standards for testing electric powered vessels by using digital twin-based criteria and procedures.

The collaborative project aims to resolve issues related to the integration of highly complex vessel systems for electric propulsion. Utilizing hardware in the loop (HiL) testing via digital twins of the different systems enables...

AI-based Norwegian sustainable shipping project wins funding

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to cut huge amounts of emissions from shipping and the Norwegian Government’s Green Platform initiative has just awarded NOK 44 million (about $4.2 million) to a project that aims to make that happen. Called Green AI for Sustainable Shipping (GASS) the project is led by e-navigation specialist NAVTOR.

Today, says NAVTOR, there are no systematic data‐driven solutions for improving energy efficiency onboard, mainly due to the complexity of ship...

Logility to acquire supply chain network design provider Starboard

supply chain technology truck on highway

Logility, an Atlanta-based supply chain management software-as-a-service platform, on Tuesday announced it has agreed to acquire Starboard Solutions Corp., a provider of a computer program that creates a digital twin of the customer’s physical supply chain.

According to its website, Traverse City, Michigan-based Starboard provides its digital twinning software platform to companies such as Deloitte, Porsche and JLL. Now, the tech will be adopted by Logility clients such as Kraft Heinz, Big Lots...

Technologies That Will Transform The Salvage Sector

New technologies and innovations are needed as the salvage sector tackles ever-more complex projects with larger ships to protect mariners, assets and the environment, reports Riviera.

The capsized carrier

This has been publicly demonstrated with the gradual removal, in Q4 2020, of the Golden Ray car carrier that capsized in Georgia. Salvage companies have also been in the media spotlight with the removal of Newcastlemax bulk carrier Wakashio off a Mauritius reef.

Faced with greater challenges,...

5G, AI & Digital Twins in Port Operations

  • The Port of Livorno has become a testbed not only for how future ports may look, but also how any future industrial setting may look.
  • Here, a digital twin allows workers to operate at the intersection of cyber and physical worlds.
  • In our 2020 technology trends, we call this the ‘collaborative and automated physical world’.

A recent article published in Ericsson, written by Marzio Puleri, Teresa Pepe, Giulio Botari and Roberto Sabella deals with the digitalization of port operations.

DNV GL & Bluewater Pilot Test Hybrid Digital Twin for FPSOs

  • Classification society DNV GL and FPSO specialist Bluewater have teamed up on a pilot project to use hybrid digital twin technology to predict and analyse fatigue on an FPSO hull.
  • The project would quantify the benefits of creating a virtual replica of the FPSO to optimize the structural safety of the vessel and enhance risk-based inspection (RBI).
  • The technology enables the monitoring of the asset’s hull structure during operation without dependence on costly routine inspection regimes.
  • Termed...
