ALAN posts notices and requests like this on an ongoing basis.

Today, FreightWaves Classics profiles the American Logistics Aid Network, another organization that also helps those impacted by natural disasters. A quote from its website says it all: “When disaster strikes, few things are more important than good logistics. In fact, it’s often the key differentiator between...

Reshaping disaster-relief logistics: 8 questions for Amazon’s Abe Diaz

Disaster-relief logistics has followed the same model for ages. Emergency teams assess the supplies they have on hand. They then procure the items that they need, after which they consolidate, pack and ship the supplies into the disaster zones. The process can take several days, time that could spell the difference between life and death for survivors of natural or man-made disasters.

For four years, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been working on a better disaster-relief mouse trap, one that...

Hurricane relief pressure-tests the ‘new normal’ supply chain

Historically, hurricane season presents abundant and often lucrative freight-hauling opportunities. For weeks or months after a storm passes, affected cities need rebuilding materials, temporary housing units, nonperishable foods, water and generators. Trucking companies and owner-operators can bid on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) contracts as early as a week or two before a hurricane makes landfall.

But COVID-19’s supply chain disruptions, like restaurant and meat plant closures,...

Hurricane season heats up – responding to a big one

Believe it or not, hurricane season is well underway, which means it’s time to keep a close eye on the weather. The Atlantic hurricane season started in June and continues through the end of November; this roughly six-month timeframe presents many opportunities for a storm to wreak havoc on economies and entire infrastructures of coastal communities large and small.

Motor carriers and independent drivers operating within Hurricane Alley need to plan prior to the landfall of a costly storm and...

The Coast Guard’s advisory panel on offshore safety has completed recommendations for how offshore supply vessels, crewboats and other vessels in the energy industry can be safely put to work assisting in disaster relief.

Those proposed steps include creating a new ‘response, restoration, and recovery vessel’ Certificate of Inspection (COI) endorsement. The so-called “Triple R Vessel” or TRV endorsement would allow operators to get preapproval of vessels that would be available to assist after...
