How AI has the ability to help prevent accidents on the road

AI has the power to transform how people work and drive positive change in entire industries. When it comes to the trucking industry, nothing is more important than improving road safety. But while AI technology is available, the trucking industry hasn’t yet fully embraced it compared to parallel industries.

Now is the time to make that change. Roads are getting more dangerous. Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows traffic deaths reached a 16-year high...

Drilling Deep: Cutting off cellphone use while driving

A company tries to fight distracted driving by reducing the abilty to drive a truck and use a cell phone at the same time.

NoCell is a relatively new company that is trying to improve driver safety by doing something fairly radical: cutting off a driver’s ability to use a lot of cellphone functions while on the road. Corey Woinarowicz of NoCell sits down with host John Kingston to discuss this simple technology and why it’s controversial.

Also on the podcast, Kingston reviews this week’s latest inventory report and what that means for the tight squeeze in diesel on the East Coast.

Defensive driving key in squelching distracted driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which means it’s time to have serious discussions with your drivers.

Distracted driving can happen to anyone and at any time — and it happens a lot more than you think. The National Safety Council estimates that eight motorists are killed every day from a distracted driving-related accident.

Just last month, distraction was cited as the cause of a rollover crash of a lumber truck in Prineville, Oregon, after the driver took his eyes off the road to ret...

Curbing driver distraction – Taking the Hire Road

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, about 7% of all fatal vehicular crashes in 2019 were related to distracted driving and resulted in 3,142 deaths.

The NoCell goal: Ending distracted driving by automatically shutting down the phone

A cellphone might today be considered a person’s most prized and necessary possession, particularly on the road. A two-year-old company called NoCell is rolling out a product that shuts down a lot of its use when it’s in the cab of a truck.

The California-based startup company had a booth at the recently-concluded Truckload Carriers Association annual meeting at which it talked about its product, a round cylinder about an inch thick and a few inches in diameter that has a fearsome power: the...

The best way to eliminate driver distractions in a smartphone age

Motor carriers have tried everything to curb distracted driving-related accidents, from embracing hands-free solutions with phone mounts to even installing driver-facing cameras. However, the urge to check one’s phone proves too strong for some drivers, regardless of the “solution.”

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, if you are driving 55 mph and take your eyes off the road for five seconds to send a text message, you have traveled the length of a football field...
