Dive boat fire captain sentenced to four year prison term

Jerry Nehl Boylan, 70, the captain of the Conception, the Santa Barbara-based dive boat involved in the deadly 2019 fire that cost 34 lives, was yesterday sentenced to 48 months in federal prison.

The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge George H. Wu. A restitution hearing was scheduled for July 11.

Conception dive boat fire: Captain guilty of seaman’s manslaughter

The captain of the Conception, the dive boat that caught fire in 2019 with the loss of 34 lives, was yesterday found guilty of seaman’s manslaughter.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California reports that a jury found Jerry Nehl Boylan, 69, of Santa Barbara, Calif., guilty of one count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer – an offense commonly called “seaman’s manslaughter” – a federal offense punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison.

Coast Guard to inspect all Subchapter T boats

The Coast Guard is examining all Subchapter T vessels following September’s fatal dive boat fire in California, an officer told a congressional hearing last week.

At least 20 dead in California dive boat fire

The Coast Guard has suspended the search in response to a vessel fire that led to the sinking of the dive boat Conception near Santa Cruz Island Monday morning. The Coast Guard searched through the night and Tuesday morning before suspending the search.
