An incident that began on October 4 with the rescue of 12 people from a vessel that grounded half a mile south of the Cyril E. King airport in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands during Tropical Storm Phillippe, has reached a successful conclusion. The vessel, the 195-foot Vanuatu-flagged RO/RO cargo vessel Bonnie G, originally delivered in 1981 as an OSV, has been refloated and relocated. It is now safely moored at the Crown Bay Sandfill dock in St. Thomas.

U.S. Coast Guard Southeast reports that crews responding to the Bonnie G grounding incident conducted successful salvage and dive operations over this past weekend off Cyril E. King Airport, in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The 195-foot Vanuatu-flagged RO/RO cargo vessel, originally delivered in 1981 as an OSV and managed by West Palm Beach, Fla., based MMS Americas LLC., grounded there October 4 during Tropical Storm Philippe, when all 12 people on board had to be rescued.

VIDEO: Boxes start to come off Ever Forward

Removal of cargo containers from the grounded containership Ever Forward got underway this past Saturday. The 1,095 feet long,12,118 TEU Evergreen Marine vessel has been bogged down in mud in Chesapeake Bay since March 13 and the boxes are being taken off in an attempt to lighten the vessel before a further attempt to refloat it is made. Three earlier attempts to refloat it using a combination of dredging and tugboat power failed.

Ever Forward: Evergreen declares General Average

A third attempt to refloat the grounded containership Ever Forward was made yesterday. It failed and the ship remains aground in Chesapeake Bay.

Today, shipowner Evergreen Marine said that, “in light of the increasing costs arising from the continued attempts to refloat the vessel,” it had declared General Average (GA). To grossly oversimplify things, GA means that cargo owners get to take a share of the salvage cost. You can find a fuller explanation of what’s involved here.

Ever Forward salvage could take quite some time

According to the latest update from cargo claims consultancy W.K. Webster, the Evergreen Marine containership Ever Forward remains grounded in the Chesapeake Bay area.

“It is apparent that efforts to refloat the vessel have so far been unsuccessful, and the salvage operation may therefore be a more protracted and difficult one,” warns the company.
