UPS gets driver-training exemption for double trailers

Truck drivers who want to take on double trailers at UPS (NYSE: UPS) will likely see a faster route to the job thanks to a new training exemption from federal regulators.

The five-year exemption, which applies only to UPS, allows the company to provide behind-the-wheel training in twin 28-foot trailers — known as doubles — for candidates holding a learner’s permit, rather than having to wait until the trainees get their CDL as required by federal law.

UPS fails in second shot at bypassing driver-trainer rules

Federal regulators remain unconvinced that UPS (NYSE: UPS) can maintain safety standards if the company were to be exempted from certain provisions included in new driver-training rules.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for the second time has denied a request by UPS that the company not need to adhere to a requirement that training instructors for its long-haul drivers have two years of experience driving a commercial truck, according to a ruling to be published Tuesday.

Louisiana approves tandem load hauling for drayage trucks

Drayage trucks hauling freight to and from Louisiana shipping ports are now able to pull a tandem of 20-foot containers under a new law aimed at addressing supply chain concerns across the state.
