Forward expands traditional LTL service

Making good on a promise to add a “handful” of traditional less-than-truckload (LTL) terminals to the network this year, Forward Air (NASDAQ: FWRD) announced Monday that it has rolled out expedited service in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The Greeneville, Tennessee-based company cited past success using a local partner in the area as a reason for selecting the site to expand its LTL footprint outside of its historical airport-to-airport network.

Federal Maritime Commission expands investigation of ports’ demurrage, detention problems

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is reacting to the growing chorus of complaints and protests about operations at the ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and New York/New Jersey by launching an expansion of an existing fact-finding mission.

The FMC on Thursday approved a supplement order that allows an expansion of an earlier order from the spring, International Ocean Transportation Supply Chain Engagement. The order specifically allows FMC Commissioner Rebecca Dye to investigate ocean...

Coalition on demurrage/detention charges seeks intervention from Federal Maritime Commission

The coalition led by the Harbor Trucking Association is looking at two routes to get relief from growing demurrage and detention charges on the key East and West Coast ports.

In a press conference Monday led by HTA CEO Weston LaBar, two key approaches were spelled out. One is a letter sent by the coalition to the Federal Maritime Commission asking the FMC to find a way to impose relief, possibly through taking steps permitted under the FMC’s “Interpretive Rule” approved earlier this year,...

Maersk moves quickly in reaction to criticism of delays in California ports

Maersk reacted quickly to last week’s broadside criticism of the current state of operations in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, releasing a response and setting up a meeting with the Harbor Trucking Association that first aired its members’ issues.

The HTA, along with the California Trucking Association, last week asked in a prepared public statement that ports and shippers suspend their demurrage and detention charges while the backlog at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach sort...

Two key trade associations representing drayage companies that operate in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are asking for a temporary suspension of detention and demurrage charges from the key entry ports that are currently overwhelmed with business.

Today’s high trucking rates suggest that peak retail season has been upon us since summer, as the industry works hard to replenish stocks. But with e-commerce giant Amazon moving its annual Prime Day to Oct. 13 and 14, the season for holiday shopping is literally arriving 75 days early this year.

Logistics and technology providers across the industry work tirelessly to bring continuity of service to an often fragmented market — especially in drayage. The Harbor Trucking Association estimates...

Truckers counter ocean carrier effort to dismiss chassis complaint

container chassis

Drayage truckers represented by the American Trucking Associations’ Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference (IMCC) fired back at a group of ocean carriers’ effort to have a complaint before the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission dismissed.

The initial IMCC complaint, which was filed with the FMC on Aug. 17, alleged the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association (OCEMA) and its 10 carrier members use “unjust and unreasonable” chassis provision model practices.

Specifically, the truckers claimed...

Should shippers rely on steamship lines for first- and last-mile logistics?

Drayage truck at port surrounded by containers

Many shippers have been readjusting their supply chains to compensate for COVID-19’s disruptions, and they may observe that in a slow market, more steamship lines are offering first- and last-mile logistics services as a way to drive additional revenue and shore up bottom lines.

On the surface, this all-in-one service offering seems like a sound idea for shippers eager to save money and time in their busy schedules. After all, who would be better than the ocean carrier to coordinate a door...
