Drivers oust Teamsters at Home Depot subsidiary in California

The Teamsters union has lost a decertification vote at an arm of Home Depot Inc. in San Jose, California, even as the workers were operating under an agreed-to contract.

Decertification votes for unions often can be successful after an inability to reach agreement on a contract, as the rank-and-file members ultimately toss in the towel on ever getting a deal from a recalcitrant management. The argument in favor of decertification in those cases is often that the workers are paying dues and...

Driver safety, ideas on reducing fuel use top concerns for SMB fleets

Commercial fleet managers are very concerned about safety, they generally trust their drivers and are running out of ideas on how to save fuel.

Those are some of the high-level takeaways from a new survey of 503 decision-makers at small and midsized businesses (fewer than 1,000 employees) operating at least five commercial vehicles. The results were released Monday by Netradyne, an artificial intelligence fleet technology provider.

The survey was conducted by Atomik Research from Sept. 21 to 28....

Louisiana staged truck accident case back in court; 2 more plead guilty

Remember the Louisiana staged accident scam and investigation? It’s kicking into gear again.

After months of no news regarding indictments, guilty pleas or sentencings, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana announced this week two recent guilty pleas.

But neither were for what is still expected to be the most significant parts of the case: the indictments of more lawyers who were allegedly involved in putting the scheme together.

In two separate but similar developments this...

Truck transportation jobs move little in November, but trend still upward

After a year in which big monthly swings — mostly gains — have been the norm for truck transportation jobs reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, November saw a minimal change.

But the change, nonetheless, was higher. November truck transportation jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to BLS, came in at 1,601,300. That’s a gain of 1,300 jobs from a revised October figure of an even 1.6 million.

However, that October figure was revised downward from an initial report of 1,601,100...

Senate proposes $755 million for truck parking

Senate lawmakers introduced legislation on Thursday that would set aside $755 million in competitive grants over four years to expand much-needed truck parking across the country.

The bipartisan Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, co-sponsored by Sens. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., and Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., will serve as companion legislation to a House version introduced last year and approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in July.

Like the House bill, which currently has...

Falling freight rates shutter Iowa trucking company after 24 years

Family-owned Mid Continent Trucking of Denison, Iowa, notified drivers and employees recently that after 24 years, the refrigerated carrier was ceasing operations two days after Thanksgiving because of worsening economic conditions and tumbling freight rates.

An email about the closing created some confusion, but the company says all displaced employees who want to work have since found jobs.

“It was a situation where economics made the decision for us that it was time to get out of the trucking...

Judge orders halt to work on teardown of Interstate 81 through Syracuse

The demolition of the Interstate 81 viaduct that slices through Syracuse, New York, that was set to start soon has been put on hold through a court order.

New York state Supreme Court Judge Gerard Neri, sitting in Onondaga County where Syracuse is located, earlier this month granted the request for an injunction sought by a relatively new group called Renew 81 for All. The suit was filed in late September against the New York State Department of Transportation and several of its leading...
