United Road Services battles inefficiency while moving 4M cars a year

Three United Road car haulers on the highway

PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Mark Anderson draws a triangle on a piece of paper and labels the three points A, B and C, illustrating how his company choreographs the movement of 4 million cars and trucks a year.

But the pandemic and the supply chain crisis played havoc with the model, creating a huge efficiency problem for the president and CEO of United Road Services.

“We go from point A and we have a plant here and we send trucks this way to point B where there’s a port. And we get trucks there and we go...

A heightened freight demand environment and a declining pool of drivers has carriers raising pay to keep their equipment moving. Driver wages have been climbing for roughly a year and a half now and will likely continue to step higher for an industry that struggles to recruit and retain labor in both good and bad markets.

Driver pay hikes continue to roll in

Pay hikes not likely to slow for some time

High demand and a lack of qualified drivers has pushed truckload carriers to raise pay substantially over the past year and a half. Wage increases have helped fleets maintain size through the pandemic, but few have been able to grow organically. Following a round of large pay increases in 2021, it appears the industry will continue to push pay rates higher to address a labor shortfall.

Two more fleets announced pay hikes this week.

Economics 101: Driver pay will keep moving higher

Don't expect driver pay to slow when this freight cycle ends

Truckload carriers started raising driver pay nearly a year and a half ago as demand skyrocketed. Following the initial COVID outbreak, consumers changed their spending habits to ready themselves for a prolonged period of at-home living, which meant more trucks would be needed to bring more household and durable goods to market. The need for additional capacity has been tough to meet for an industry that perpetually struggles to recruit and retain drivers.

The pandemic exacerbated a shortfall on...
