Security consultancy Dryad Global is warning vessels operating off West Africa, in and around Nigeria’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) where security forces operate to be vigilant after another suspected pirate attack in 100 miles southwest of Bonny, Nigeria.

Latest West Africa pirate attack shows need for response co-ordination

A container vessel, the Maersk Regensburg, became the latest victim of an attack today as poverty and organised crime combine to make a dual threat to vessel operators in the West African region.

Tommi Ritscher crew released

Eight crew members held hostage for a month following an armed attack by pirates off the coast of West Africa have been released and are on their way home safe and well according to reports from Dryad Global.

The 5,000TEU Tommi Ritscher, was attacked on 20 April, while at anchorage four miles off Benin. Eleven crew members were able to reach the citadel safely, however, a further eight crew were captured by pirates. Dryad Global believe that a lack of guards would have encouraged the attackers....

Armed guards repel attack on Stolt tanker in Gulf of Aden

Underscoring the fact that the Gulf of Aden remains a dangerous place, UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) yesterday reported that a vessel had been attacked in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen’s port of Mukalla, at13° 43N 050° 37.4E

Subsequent reports identified the vessel as the U.K.-flagged 2016-built, 32,798 dwt chemical products tanker Stolt Apal, managed by Stolt Tankers B.V.

The pirates approached the Stolt Apal in two skiffs.

W. Africa hostages released says Dryad Global

Three crew from the ro-ro vessel Elobey VI and a further seven crew from the MSC operated Talia F were released from captivity after pirates had taken the seafarers hostage off the West African coast on 21 March and 22 March, respectively.
