The plunge in dry bulk shipping: Ominous signal on China’s economy?

photo of a dry bulk ship unloading in China

It wasn’t just container shipping that raked in the cash last year. Dry bulk shipping enjoyed its best year in a decade. This year is different.

Container shipping spot rates have fallen, but contract rates are up, supporting average rates. Ongoing port congestion is still tying up container ships and partially offsetting a pullback in cargo demand. Container lines will earn even more in 2022 than 2021.

Not so in dry bulk. Spot rates have nosedived and bulker owners are far more exposed to spot...

Shipping stocks in crosshairs as fears mount on China, war, inflation

shipping stocks

Shipping stocks fell sharply on Monday as Wall Street’s main indexes closed higher. Multiple shipping names sank by double digits, adding to last week’s pullback.

U.S.-listed shipowner shares face simultaneous sentiment pressures on multiple fronts.

The longer China’s COVID lockdowns last and the further they spread, the more concern there is on China’s economy, its demand for tanker and dry bulk import cargoes, and its ability to export containerized cargoes. Russia-Ukraine war fallout is...

War and shipping stocks: Container, dry bulk, product tanker shares up

shipping stocks

The Russia-Ukraine war is the kind of geopolitics-altering event that should shake up trade flows for years to come, promising big repercussions for shipping shares.

A month into the conflict, American Shipper spoke with Randy Giveans, shipping analyst at Jefferies, about how the war is affecting — or not yet affecting — the stocks in different vessel segments.

There have been some big stock moves already, outperforming the broader stock market. But it’s still too early to see the full impact....

Russian invasion propels price of ship fuel to historic high

shipping Ukraine

The price of ship fuel was flirting with a new record even before Russia invaded Ukraine. Then war broke out, and the highs of the past were left far behind. Ship fuel costs have “gone parabolic,” said Braemar ACM Shipbroking.

To the extent the fuel cost increase is passed along to the shippers of containerized goods and bulk commodities such as oil and grain, it will add to inflation. To the extent it’s not passed on, it will lower shipping’s bottom line.

Ships consumed high sulfur fuel oil...

Dry bulk shipping rates hit $80,000 per day as buyers scramble for coal

dry bulk shipping

Yet another sign of stress for energy supplies and global supply chains: Spot rates for large dry cargo ships just topped $80,000 per day for the first time since 2009, and freight derivatives for the fourth quarter — a period when rates for these vessels normally pull back — just spiked.

Not long ago, it was a different story. On Sept. 20, headlines were dominated by Chinese property developer Evergrande and its impending collapse; fallout to construction and steel demand would assumedly hit...

Battle of the shipping booms: Containers ‘21 vs dry bulk ‘07-‘08

container dry bulk shipping

Container shipping is in uncharted territory. There has never been a crazy boom like this in its history. But as any shipping long-timer will tell you, there has indeed been a crazy boom like this in another sector: dry bulk circa 2007-2008.

It’s worth a look back at this earlier shipping mega-spike. First, to compare and contrast with this year’s meteoric rise in container shipping profits. And second, to put current dry bulk rates — which are at decade highs and still rising — in perspective.

Dr...
