The Mystery Behind the Panama Canal Traffic Jam

Credit: Canal De Panama

Historically low water levels in the Panama Canal, triggered by prolonged drought conditions, have resulted in a significant traffic jam. This vital maritime passage handles hundreds of billions of dollars in global trade and currently has eighty-nine vessels waiting to traverse it.

The canal primarily relies on rainwater from Gatún Lake, an artificial reservoir nearby, to operate its lock system. Each ship requires approximately fifty million...

Will extreme weather become more frequent by midcentury?

El Nino — the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean — affects climate, ecosystems and societies worldwide.

A study published earlier this month examined four possible scenarios for future carbon emissions and found an increased risk of El Nino events in all four. This means El Nino events and associated climate extremes are now more likely “regardless of any significant mitigation actions” to reduce emissions, the researchers warned.

Robotic Probes Monitor Climate Change Effect on Ocean Microbes

  • A fleet of robotic probes called floats will investigate the effect of global warming in the ocean.
  • The probes detect the pH, temperature and oxygen levels.
  • The floats have already found how CO2 level increases in winter and oxygen drops.
  • They are also useful in discovering new Phytoplankton blooms.
  • Next year they will be used to understand the effect of El Nino.

In a Science Magazine article, Paul Voosen writes on global warming’s impact on microscopic ocean life and how  robotic probes...

NOAA increases chance for above-normal hurricane season

Last week, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters that monitor oceanic and atmospheric patterns said conditions are now more favorable for above-normal hurricane activity since El Nino has now ended. Two named storms have formed so far this year and the peak months of the hurricane season, August through October, are now underway.

“NOAA will continue to deliver the information that the public depends on before, during and after any storms throughout the hurricane season,”...
