Tariffs and retail prices: What consumers need to know

Tariffs on retail goods don’t usually directly control the final price that consumers pay.

When products are brought into the U.S., the tariff is calculated based on the declared value of the goods at the point of import, not on the retail price at which they’re sold.

This declared value omits additional costs such as labor, marketing, logistics, rent and the profit margin that retailers add. Consequently, the price on the shelf can be significantly higher than the tariffed import value.

On Feb. 23, I published an article on FreightWaves titled “2024 presidential election may have big impact on supply chains.” We now know the outcome of the presidential election so we can begin to analyze the actual impacts on supply chains when President Donald Trump will be sworn in on Jan. 20, 2025.

Trump’s Trade Playbook: The Earth was never flat, after all

Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat” painted an optimistic picture of globalization, where economic borders would dissolve, leading to a world of endless opportunities and mutual prosperity through interconnected economies. This vision, however, has faced significant scrutiny and revaluation, especially post-COVID-19.

The vulnerability of global trade networks

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the fragility of global supply chains. Far from being resilient, these networks were shown to be highly...

Migrating supply chains out of China about national security, not just economics

Tariffs are getting much attention, but we should discuss why sourcing from China is an existential risk.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stated that he intends to unite Taiwan with China peacefully or by force. Analysts have projected this will take place between 2027 and ’29.

Taiwan will not volunteer to join China, so it will only happen through force.

Taiwan is highly armed (for its size) and has the benefit of advanced technology from the U.S. It will bring a hell of a fight.

Conversely,...

Election 2024: US lawmakers who support freight fraud initiatives

Over the past few years, growing threats in the freight and retail sectors prompted lawmakers to propose legislation targeting freight fraud and organized retail crime (ORC).

With increased incidents of organized theft along supply chain routes and sophisticated retail crime schemes, these legislative efforts seek to secure the movement of goods and support law enforcement in tackling these crimes.

GOP Senate majority could mean different future for rail safety legislation

By Loren Smith

While the final margins may not be determined for some time in several outstanding races, the election results are coming into focus. Former President Donald Trump has been reelected, Republicans have won a majority in the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House will be split fairly closely, as it has been for the past four years.

With the Senate shifting...
