Can Karno technology generate a buyer for Hyliion?

Unwinding the powertrain business at Hyliion Holdings was uncomfortable, especially for 175 employees who lost their jobs in November. But the leaned-out startup is making some progress in its pivot to energy distribution through a fuel-agnostic power generator.

Whether the plan is sufficient to generate revenue and perhaps attract a buyer for the once high-flying special purpose acquisition company are the big unknowns.

The Karno generator, which Hyliion purchased from GE in August 2022 for its...

ATA’s Spear rips ‘self-promoting union bosses’ in annual address

AUSTIN, Texas — “Self-promoting union bosses” encouraged by the “most pro-union president in history” are making trouble for the trucking industry, American Trucking Associations CEO Chris Spear said in his annual membership address.

But he had plenty of invective for California regulators. And he criticized a century-old excise tax that adds $25,000 to the typical cost of a new heavy-duty truck.

“Trial lawyers chasing jackpot justice, self-promoting union bosses and delusional environmental...

FHWA declines to set truck standards in EV charging rule

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration has largely avoided taking into account the concerns of the trucking industry in rolling out its first set of standards and requirements for a nationwide electric vehicle charging network.

The intentional hands-off approach, according to a final rule to be published by the Federal Highway Administration on Tuesday, is meant to avoid getting in the way of evolving technology for powering medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) electric trucks.

“The FHWA … cannot...

A startup’s big bet on a Southwest electric truck corridor

Neha Palmer helped Google build data centers that operate on 100% renewable energy. Don’t bet against TeraWatt Infrastructure, the startup Palmer co-founded, doing the same thing on a four-state electric truck charging corridor along Interstate 10 in the American Southwest.

The corridors are coming

Startup TeraWatt’s announcement Thursday of a Long Beach, California, to El Paso, Texas, corridor of high-speed charging stations for electric trucks will cost hundreds of millions. With $1 billion in...

California asks shipping lines to avoid shore power during brutal heat wave

A view of a large cargo ship at the dock, looking straight on from the bow. with Matson containers stacked on the dock to the side on a bright day.

In an ironic twist, California officials are encouraging ocean-going vessels not to plug into shore power for several days to reduce demand on the electric grid during a record heat wave and instead use dirtier energy sources for power at berth because the electric infrastructure installed to cut pollution, including climate-warming greenhouse gasses, is now under threat.

Gov. Gavin Newsome on Friday afternoon issued a new emergency proclamation aimed at preserving power capacity that gives...

Electric vehicle fast chargers are  critical to keeping power-hungry commercial trucks that run on battery power moving. Australia’s Tritium built its first direct-current fast charger a decade ago. Now, it is growing its U.S. presence. Tesla is taking hefty deposits for its battery-powered Semi, and Volvo Truck is sharing a guidebook  from its LIGHTS electrification project in California.
