EDI still proves to be powerful solution for carrier-shipper connections

If you don’t know what electronic data interchange (EDI) is, it’s likely you’ve at least heard it mentioned by one of your supply chain partners at some point.

EDI has been the front-running choice for internal information sharing between shippers and carriers for decades. It allows two companies to efficiently transmit data electronically between internal systems, removing the need for data entry or phone calls that would have previously been required. EDI is how a carrier, for instance, can...

Electronic Data Interchange ought to be replaced, the Digital Container Standards Association has argued.

Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) is a non-profit, independent organisation established in 2019 by several of the largest container shipping companies. DCSA’s mission is to be the de facto standards...

Feds to automate crew inspections for US-bound ships

After 10 years of testing an automated system for vetting crews arriving on commercial ships, the U.S. is finally ready to go fully paperless.

In an interim final rule to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is amending its regulations to require that vessel operators submit Form I-418, known as the passenger/crew list, in electronic form instead of the current paper requirement.

The new process is aimed at streamlining vessel arrivals and departures...

Ransomware attack on EDI provider highlights cyber risks in supply chain

A graphic illustration of boxes coming out of a laptop screen to illustrate how an EDI system works. An EDI provider was targeted in a ransomware attack recently.

A ransomware attack has targeted an electronic data interchange (EDI) provider that works with some of the largest shippers in North America and IBM’s supply chain network. The incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities of the most widely used type of technology that businesses use to communicate information about freight.

The CEO and owner of Canada-based Faxinating Solutions, Steve Hatajlo, disclosed the attack to FreightWaves after the Conti ransomware gang posted 15 files to a leak...

As disruptive technology continues to find its way into logistics stakeholders’ workflows, there is also a parallel transition within industry standards of businesses migrating from archaic technology platforms to contemporary alternatives. This includes the industry’s foremost and ubiquitous data transfer method — the electronic data interchange (EDI) — in which data is transferred electronically via a standardized format that allows one company to send information to another.

EDI dates back...

Within the global food supply chain, seafood logistics are among the most compromised, due to the widespread misuse of labels and direct seafood fraud. Marine conservation non-profit Oceana published a report on the extent of seafood fraud within North America. Its research showed that the U.S. was particularly vulnerable, as 90% of all the country’s seafood is imported – often from Southeast Asia.

Unisot, a Norwegian blockchain-based company, is working to bring visibility into global seafood...

Drayage update: The future of EDI (with video)

Bristlecone Vice President Vikram Kaul on video chat

Social, political and economic conditions at the national and global levels are changing at breakneck speed, and it is more important than ever to maintain clear lines of communication and information sharing across the logistics industry.

Electronic data interchange (EDI) may not be a brand new technology, but it is a prominent and effective way to keep track of transactions. EDI digitizes the paper trail involved in every transaction, significantly cutting down on errors.
