Freight industry: Which regulations should DOT cut?

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation is giving freight carriers, trade groups, small businesses and others a direct line to the Trump administration to explain what regulations should be revised or taken off the books.

“Consistent with DOT’s commitment to public participation in the rulemaking process, DOT is beginning this process by soliciting views from the public on how best to conduct its analysis of existing DOT regulations, guidance, or reporting requirements,” the...

FMCSA told to strengthen ELD requirements

WASHNGTON — Safety investigators have warned the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to tighten electronic logging device (ELD) requirements to prevent trucking companies and their drivers from creating fake driver hours-of-service (HOS) logs.

The recommendation by the National Transportation Safety Board was included in a crash report issued on Wednesday concluding that truck driver fatigue, due to excessive driving time and limited opportunity to sleep, was the probable cause of a...

FMCSA removes 2 ELDs from registered list due to malfunctions

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Thursday removed two ELDs from its registered list.

The agency removed Blue Star ELD and Reliable ELD from its list due to the companies’ failure to meet the minimum requirements. According to the revoked ELDs list maintained by the FMCSA, the devices experienced malfunctions related to visual alerts. Blue Star ELD was previously revoked in May but was later reinstated.

The FMCSA also removed four devices from the list in July.

Axle aims to empower trucking companies using big data

While digital highways are connecting more and more of the global supply chain — including linking every tractor-trailer in the U.S. to the internet — the founders of Axle said most trucking companies and logistics operators are still missing out on a wealth of data.

“We noticed that transportation and trucking companies, everyone from carriers, broker, shippers, they just weren’t getting the full value of technology that was available,” Dhruv Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Axle, told...

CEO of ELD ONE vows to fix platform after FMCSA revocation

After a notice Tuesday by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that it is revoking an electronic logging device — TMS ONE’s ELD ONE — from its list of self-certified ELDs, CEO Radu Murzac says the company is working on a fix and plans to have the “final issue” resolved in less than two weeks.

“When we first came to market, the process to become an ELD provider was relatively new,” Murzac told FreightWaves. “We navigated this process with the best interpretation of the law as we could....

Robin Hutcheson discusses priorities for FMCSA

FMCSA Administrator Robin Hutcheson

Last month Robin Hutcheson was confirmed as the seventh administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, but she has been leading the agency since January after acting administrator Meera Joshi left to become a deputy mayor of New York City.

It has been a busy year for Hutcheson since then. Barely a week after she took the wheel at FMCSA, the U.S. Department of Transportation rolled out its National Roadway Safety Strategy, an agency-wide initiative aimed at tackling road...

Are ELDs making the trucking industry safer?

Truck electronic logging device

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has required full industry compliance with the ELD mandate since December 2019, so it’s reasonable to ask, is the device making the trucking industry safer?

While there is as yet no government-approved study providing definitive answers, Ronnie Brown III, who drives for Waterloo, Iowa-based Gray Transportation, says no.

“ELD and hours of service as they are set make drivers such as myself drive tired at times without the ability to stop for a nap...

FMCSA considers hours-of-service exemption for truck driver

Monitor inside a truck cab.

Federal regulators are considering a company truck driver’s request for a sweeping exemption from hours-of-service (HOS) and ELD rules, and the public will have a chance to comment.

In applying for the exemption, Ronnie Brown III, a driver for Waterloo, Iowa-based Gray Transportation, contends that the “one-size-fits-all” aspect of the regulations poses safety risks because the rules do not always coincide with his “natural sleep patterns,” according to his application filed with the Federal...

FMCA revokes electronic logging device from ArionTech

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued an alert Friday informing the trucking industry that an electronic logging device is no longer approved for truck drivers and motor carriers to use.

The ArionT ELD was placed on the FMCSA’s revoked devices list for failure to meet minimum requirements pertaining to hours-of-service limits, according to a news release. It appears to be the first device the agency has invalidated, joining a list of about 50 ELDs that have been “self-revoked.”

Is FMCSA losing control of its safety mission?

Federal regulators are losing their grip on how they administer and oversee rules governing truckers, and it’s putting safety at risk, trucking and safety advocates warn.

In comments filed with U.S. Department on Transportation on the department’s draft strategic framework, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), whose members include local, state and federal truck safety officials, contends that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration “has fallen behind on its core responsibility...
