Emirates leases additional Boeing 747 freighters to meet shipper demand

Emirates, the fourth-largest cargo airline in the world by traffic carried and No. 2 in passengers, said Wednesday it has increased main-deck cargo capacity by 15% with the wet lease of two additional Boeing 747-400 freighters to meet surging demand. 

The large all-cargo aircraft are being rented under a multiyear transportation services agreement with Bulgaria-based Compass Cargo Airlines, the Dubai-based carrier said in a news release.

Emirates to nearly double 777 freighter fleet by late 2026

Emirates, a top-five airline by cargo tonnage, has ordered another five 777 freighters from Boeing for delivery in 2025 and 2026 to support growing cargo demand, the Middle East airline announced Monday.

The carrier currently has 14 777-300 freighters on firm order from Boeing, including five it committed to purchase in July.

Emirates’ 777 order underscores Airbus’ outlook for large freighters

The cargo branch of Dubai-based Emirates, the world’s fourth-largest airline by freight traffic, committed Tuesday to purchase an additional five 777 freighters from Boeing for $1 billion, adding needed supply of widebody freighters as demand for air shipping grows.

The announcement comes a day after Airbus upgraded by 3.3% its demand forecast for widebody freighters through 2043 but trimmed its overall outlook for freighter aircraft.

Emirates taps Kalitta Air to fly rented 747 freighters

The air cargo division of Emirates has temporarily augmented its fleet with two older Boeing 747 jumbo jet freighters to meet expected demand while it waits for manufacturers to fill orders for new aircraft, the Dubai-based airline said Monday.

Emirates to retrofit 10 Boeing 777 jets for cargo

The airfreight division of Emirates said Tuesday it is more than doubling an initial order to convert used 777-300 passenger jets into cargo haulers, putting the fleet on track for 21 freighters by 2026 to meet shipper needs for more air transport. Emirates invests in converted and new 777 freighters

Cargo-in-cabin innovation remains popular for some airlines

Passenger aircraft dedicated purely to cargo operations have played an important role during the pandemic in delivering critical humanitarian and commercial supplies, as well as generating revenue for cash-strapped airlines when travel plummeted.
