Analysis: How green is DSV’s Green Logistics initiative?

At the November Glasgow climate conference, COP26, the Danish government along with other states and carrier Maersk Line, agreed to push for zero emissions from shipping by 2050, doubling the maritime sector’s emissions target.
The maritime sector failed to build on this initiative during its own environmental meeting at the International Maritime Organization that same month, deferring decisions on emissions.
Copenhagen’s COP26 climate initiative has intensified the pressure on supply chains...

Artec Vida launches revolutionary sailing feeder ship design

Small UK-based engineering firm Artec Vida has launched a feeder vessel design it believes will revolutionise the shortsea feeder market.
It would reduce vessel emissions by up to 85%, according to CEO Graham Ford.
The vessel is a 1,000 teu sailing ship, branded the Container Caravel, and the design uses hoops to support sails which are furled using modern technology.
“All equipment is computer-controlled using ‘sail-by-wire’ technology, including multiple back-ups that minimise the …

Plenty of orders for new LNG-fuelled box ships, but conversions are too costly

According to shipbroker Gibson, the current orderbook for LNG-fuelled vessels stands at over 130 ships, including 40 containerships.
“Of these, Hapag-Lloyd has six 23,000 teu vessels under construction at DSME, CMA CGM has four 22,000 teu vessels on order, along with nine 15,000 teu vessels at HHI, while Eastern Pacific Shipping has 10 14,800 teu ships on order from HHI,” reported Gibson.
However, there is little appetite for ordering smaller LNG-fuelled container …

CMA CGM unveils another major green step with purchase of bio-methane fuel

CMA CGM has stepped up its investment into alternative fuels, launching a project to buy 12,000 tonnes of bio-methane on a guarantee-of-origin basis.
It noted that this amount of fuel would be enough to power two of its intra-Europe subsidiary Containerships’ 1,400 teu LNG-powered vessels, deployed on a St Petersburg-Rotterdam Baltic Sea feeder loop, for an entire year.
However, the company stressed that, acquiring the fuel did not mean it would be …

DHL steps up its bid to go from ‘yellow’ to green with new emissions targets

DHL has joined hundreds of major companies in signing up to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), part of its accelerated roadmap to decarbonisation.
It has also promised investment in climate-neutral logistics of €7bn ($8.35bn), up to 2030.
Some 1,200 companies are now using the SBTi, which aims to cut global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and must follow a “rigorous process” to develop an emissions reduction target in line with  the initiative’s criteria.
