Trump lifts Empire Wind stop work order

The Trump administration has lifted the stop work order on the Empire Wind 1 project that was imposed by Secretary of Energy Doug Burgum on April 16.

The news was welcome by developer Equinor and by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul who had pledged to fight the shut down of the fully-permitted project “every step of the way.”

Equinor secures $3 billion in project financing for Empire Wind 1

In a sign that lenders have not soured on U.S. offshore wind, Equinor reports that its Empire Wind 1 project has now secured a project financing package of over $3 billion. Financial close was reached at the end of December 2024.

Equinor says that, due to strong interest from lenders, the Empire Wind 1 project was able to secure competitive terms and that the final group of lenders includes some of the most experienced lenders in the sector along with many of Equinor’s relationship banks.

NYSERDA finalizes new Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind contracts

NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) has finalized new purchase and sales agreements for the energy produced by two major offshore wind projects:

  • Empire Wind 1, a planned 810-megawatt project (developed by Equinor)
