Convoy targets prevention of 3.8M pounds of trucking emissions

A Convoy semi-truck is traveling across a bridge with a green background.

Digital freight network Convoy aims to prevent 3.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from trucking in 2022, the company said Tuesday in its second sustainability report. The Seattle-based company has targeted reducing empty miles as the main strategy to achieve this goal.

From Convoy’s founding in 2015 through the end of 2021, it prevented more than 7 million pounds of carbon emissions from being released, according to the Tuesday report. About 2.8 million of those 7 million pounds of...

Fleets burdened with wasted miles can find relief through predictive weather systems

The struggle to minimize empty miles has been a well-known thorn in the side of carriers of all sizes for decades. But Tomorrow.io is bringing perspective to the lower-profile adjacent problem of wasted miles. Despite having different causes, wasted miles result in the same economic repercussions as empty miles.

“Empty miles are one of the most frequently discussed form of waste in the logistics industry,” Ayala Rudoy, vice president and general manager of the Logistics & Enterprise Business...

The burden of empty miles

Full truckload freight is responsible for 252 million metric tons of carbon emissions every year, and 87 million tons of that is attributed to empty miles. Carriers bear the brunt of the hardship that empty miles create, but the issue burdens the industry across the board. Because carriers consider fuel costs, capacity demands and expected waste, all those involved in the supply chain feel the financial and environmental impact of empty miles.

In partnership, FreightWaves and Convoy recently...

Transfix ESG report: Digital platform helping reduce waste in freight

Transfix released its first ESG report.

Digital freight platform Transfix’s first environmental, social and governance report says the Transfix platform “helps mitigate operational waste and carbon emissions by utilizing data, machine learning, automation, and human expertise to help carriers reduce their empty miles and shippers lessen their indirect emissions.”

The report, released Tuesday, focuses on how Transfix’s platform can help reduce emissions through consolidating shipments and decreasing empty miles and backhaul. It also...

Economic and environmental impacts of empty miles vs. electrification

When comparing the economic and environmental benefits of reducing empty miles in a transportation network versus waiting for electrification and alternative fuel vehicles to penetrate the market, Aaron Terrazas, the director of economic development at Convoy, discovered the huge immediate impact of route optimization on carbon emissions

“Given the state of technology and deployment, its impact is much larger today,” he said. “Of course, that begins to erode over time. Reducing empty miles...

Should trucking focus on empty miles or electric vehicles? — Net-Zero Carbon

Net Zero Carbon explores the impact of reducing empty miles versus switching to electric vehicles.

The elimination of empty miles and adoption of electric vehicle technology are both needed to decarbonize transportation, according to FreightWaves’ Tyler Cole and Convoy’s Aaron Terrazas.

On this episode of Net-Zero Carbon, Cole, FreightWaves’ director of carbon intelligence, sits down with Terrazas, the director of economic research at Convoy, to learn about the company’s latest research comparing the emission-reduction potential of electric vehicles and the elimination of empty miles.

“Tons...

Convoy’s F3 message is clear: #NoEmptyMiles

This week at FreightWaves’ F3 Virtual Experience, Convoy is promoting the hashtag #NoEmptyMiles. While the reduction of empty miles is a common topic of conversation for Convoy, Head of Sustainability Jennifer Wong doesn’t feel like the message is ever emphasized enough.

“It’s such a win-win-win opportunity,” said Wong. “You’re not only reducing empty miles to reduce carbon emission waste, but you can also reduce wasted dollars. You reduce wasted time and energy that truck drivers have today in...

Convoy survey: Trucking divided on sustainability, climate change

Convoy conducted a survey to gain truck drivers' insights on sustainability.

A survey released Tuesday by Convoy found that U.S. trucking companies are very open to sustainable solutions that save money and reduce emissions, but there are still conflicting views on climate change and environmental regulations.

The digital freight network surveyed about 600 small and midsize trucking companies.

“Truck drivers, especially the nation’s owner-operators and smaller carriers, are a key part in helping the freight industry move to a more sustainable future of freight. Their...

An inside look at Blume Global’s empty-mile reduction strategies

Blume Global's street turn and domestic reload strategies reduce empty miles.

Whether it’s a container of imports heading from Southern California into the heartland of the U.S. or a family vacation to a theme park, it’s the destination that always garners most of the attention.

The return trip, meanwhile, usually is forgettable.

But Blume Global is turning what some in the industry may consider a necessary (and costly) evil into an opportunity to save money and reduce emissions, thanks to its domestic reload and street-turn strategies.

Consider this: The ports of Los...
