U.S. LNG exports soar

Graphic shows U.S. LNG export totals over time in relation to export terminal capacity

Figures released yesterday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) show that monthly U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports reached record highs in the first half of 2021, averaging 9.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). This average marks an increase of 42%, or 2.8 Bcf/d, compared with the same period in 2020 (according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s LNG Monthly reports and EIA estimates for June 2021, based on shipping data from Bloomberg Finance L.P.).

Wärtsilä reports encouraging results with zero carbon fuels

Full-scale engine tests running on ammonia and hydrogen as fuels have recently been carried out in Wärtsilä’s engine laboratory in Vaasa, Finland.

The tests are being performed to assess the optimum engine parameters for running on these fuels and the results are reported to be “very encouraging.” One test engine performed very well when running on a fuel with 70% ammonia content at a typical marine load range. Tests were also completed successfully on another engine in pure hydrogen operation.

Hyundai orders world’s first ME-GA engines

MAN Energy Solutions has booked the first orders for its new low pressure ME-GA two-stroke stroke engine. HHI-EMD (Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine Machinery Division) has ordered a dozen of them.

Six new 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers will each be powered by two 5G70ME-GA10.5 engines.
