Port of Long Beach award $3 mil. to improve water quality around Long Beach

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners granted over $3 million in order to support four projects that will help improve water quality in and around Long Beach as part of the Port Community Grants Program.

The $46.4 million program aims at reducing the environmental impacts of goods movement. Combined with $18.2 million given during a previous program, the Port has pledged $65 million to improve the health of children, seniors and other vulnerable populations who live near the harbor.

NYK presents plan for decarbonised vessel

As part of NYK’s attempt to achieve ship decarbonization, the company announced that it is planning a new ship called ‘NYK Super Eco Ship 2050’, which will try to meet this goal.

NYK Super Eco Ship 2050’s design incorporates reduced resistance of the hull by reducing the weight of the hull and improving the hull form. The ship will also have electric propulsion using fuel cell and adopting highly efficient propulsion equipment. These features will reduce the ship’s weight by 70%, thus reducing...

We are the last generation that can save the environment, WWF says

WWF published the report ‘Living Planet’ in which it reports that wildlife populations have decreased by 60%, in a span of 40 years. It states that this generation is the first that knows people are destroying the environment and the last one that can do something to reverse it.

In fact, more than 4,000 mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian species are declining quickly between 1970 and 2014. This means that the current rates of species extinction are 1,000 times higher than ever before.

MOL equips 80 bulk carriers with energy saving technology

MOL will retrofit 80 of its operated bulkcarriers with a new service called NAPA Fleet Intelligence with Noon Report (NAPA FI) developed by NAPA Ltd. NAPA FI uses information from the vessel’s logs and AIS, to analyze propulsion performance.

NAPA FI verifies the effects of measures to limit GHG emissions from MOL-operated vessels, such as more effective engine output control, timely measures for hull and propellers maintenance to avoid reduction of propulsion.

MOL expects NAPA FI to improve...

Natural gas can be as bad for climate as conventional marine fuels, report says

According to a new report by the NGO Transport & Environment (T&E), using natural gas for transport is as bad for the climate as using petrol, diesel or conventional marine fuels.

The report considers the effects of leakage of methane, saying that fossil gas could increase GHG emissions by up to 9% or decrease them by a maximum of 12% across all transport modes. In shipping, the impact of LNG is close to that of marine gas oil, but these figures depen on engine methane slip and upstream leakage.
