Daimler Truck CEO calls for strong Class 8 market in ’23

Class 8 trucks orders in queue look healthy heading into the new year even as a September order record resulted in lower but still solid bookings in the last three months of 2022.

“The demand that we saw out there for ’22 that none of us were able to build, that will continue in ’23,” John O’Leary, president and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, told FreightWaves. “They’re very committed to make those buys this year regardless of what the economic headwinds may look like.”

Paccar recalls 16,033 Peterbilt refuse trucks following rollover crashes

Paccar Inc. is recalling 16,033 Peterbilt refuse trucks built over the last eight years following three rollover accidents traced to insufficient axle bracket support.

Peterbilt investigated engineering and manufacturing of weld processes at plants after a July 2021 report of a rollover crash in Houston. A second rollover was reported in Detroit a month later and a third was in Denver in March 2022.

Paccar’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not specify any...

Outrider puts the (robotic) arm to autonomous yard trucks

Disconnecting brake and electric lines from yard tractors and connecting them to semi-trailer and chassis happens 6 billion times annually in 10 million tractor-trailers around the world.

To move these trailers, truck drivers manually connect pressurized brake lines to trailers. That releases the parking brake, allowing trailers to move around the yard. Getting in and out of yard trucks that transition trailers from dock doors to parking spots to public roads is constant.

There’s a robot for that

Is Range Energy’s electrification push the future of trailers?

Making the cooling units on refrigerated trucks run on electricity instead of diesel saves fuel and reduces emissions. Startup Range Energy is betting investor money that trailer electrification can do more than just prevent liquified ice cream from arriving at the grocery store.

“What we’re doing is bringing all of the electrification that you see happening in vehicles and in power units to the trailer,” said Ali Javidan, Range Energy founder and CEO and former head of vehicle prototyping at...

TuSimple, Navistar end autonomous truck partnership

TuSimple Holdings and Navistar Inc. are going their separate ways. Their two-year marriage intended to birth a purpose-built Class 8 autonomous truck for long-haul freight is ending in divorce.

The announcement late Monday is the latest setback for TuSimple (NASDAQ: TSP). Boardroom drama and federal investigations have sent its shares to a 52-week low on the Nasdaq. Shares traded at midday Tuesday down 12.17% at $1.99.

Since a friendly panel discussion during CES in January, relations have soured...

Class 8 truck orders — nowhere to go but down

Class 8 truck orders posted a respectable 33,000 units in November. But they fell for a second consecutive month after record bookings in September. Supply chain issues, growing backlogs and a slowing economy are likely to prevent big monthly orders in the near term.

Orderbooks are fully open. Pent-up demand for new equipment remains strong. And carrier profitability creates a willingness to spend on equipment, said Eric Crawford, ACT Research vice president and senior analyst.

“We continue to...

Navistar recalls more than 31,000 trucks for suspect fasteners

Navistar Inc. is recalling more than 31,000 trucks and buses across its lineup because improper heat treating on hex flange lock nuts could lead to the fasteners breaking, resulting in unstable steering and the increased possibility of a crash.

The truck maker owned by Germany’s Traton Group, said it was unaware of any field failures, crashes or injuries related to the condition. The recalled vehicles have nonconforming hex flange lock nuts. Similar vehicles have conforming parts.
